I'm thinking about overland hauling my boat from NJ to Tampa Bay for the winter and then sailing home in the spring. (Time this fall is really tight) Has anyone had any experience and recommendations. Thanks. Mike McPartland C36MkII 'GRATITUDE'

Arrange your transport at least 2 months ahead if possible and confirm your delivery about 2 weeks before shipping. When I shipped mine ( c-27) from Ft Lauderdale to Mississippi my shipper misplaced my reservation and I had to find a new on in two days. This was not an easy task, as my blood pressure had shot through the roof. But I did find one. Make sure you find out what your oversized load fee will be before hand. Also find out how much escort for the oversize load will be and that its also confirmed before departure. My boat squeeked through the size limit at 8'10" wide. It was actually about 2 inches over the normal limit but the driver took a chance for me. One other note...make SURE you watch the company load the boat, things seem to get broken that were not broken before the trip.

We had our C-36 trucked form San Diego to Portland Oregon. While the trucking co. was right on time and the boat arived where and when as promised. However there was damage due to the age of the boat, and damage down to the boat. During the recomissioning, there not able to reassymble the rigging. The mast was damaged and so was the sole where there stode the boome and other parts. It cost us about $20,000to get the boat back, after the insurance paid there part. I would look very carefully at trucking a boat again. Good luck Bob

While you do need to be cautious, most trucking companies take great care in getting your boat from A to B. Rob had his 37' boat trucked from Houston to Portland for $4100. Truck arrived in perfect condition and early to boot. You should take care to pack the boat up carefully so nothing comes loose or rolls around & breaks on the ride. Make sure you get references as well. LaDonna

I recently shipped a Catalina 380 from Daytona Beach to San Francisco. The coat was $6500... I decommissioned and bubble wrapped the boat myself. I took off all the canvass, boom, furler shrouds, spreaders, wind instruments, undid all the wiring etc. I also LABELED EVERYTHING..It took only one day. The trucking Co (DUDLEY) took 8 days. They did all the permitting and arrived on exact time, with no suprises. I did insure the boat to the max. (Defender) and am glad that I did not have a claim to report. Additionally, the recommissioning and tuning took me about six hours. It can be done with a little effort and great satisfaction...................

I shipped my Catalina 30 from Covington, Ky to Northport, Mi. this spring. I used Marine Xpress. I would use them again in a minute. No problems, they handled all permits and the driver, named Gerry, handled everything like a pro. He supervised the loading and added extra supports to the boat, so "he wouldn't have to worry!" I do recommend you be present to load and unload, and you should do as much of the prep as you feel comfortable with. Marine Xpress was also the lowest quote I received $1240 for the trip. Nice new equipment was impressive. Good Luck Dave

I purchased my boat in Georgia and had it hauled to Maryland. I called my boat insurance agent who recommended a trucker who specialized in boat hauling. I requested his insurance company info and contacted them for a history. After a clean bill of health, he picked up the boat and delivered it on time with no damage. As for prep, make sure everything and I mean everything is secured. Also, you may want to think about a cover over the bow. this will protect it from road dirt and stones that may fly up from the cab. It also will reduce the dirt that flows off the cab's exhuast pipes.
