Hauling out

I’m about to haul my 331 for a bottom job. Previously I’ve used a mobile sling, but this new marina will be using a crane. Does anybody see any problems with this?

Most yards that I have frequented have used a travel lift; however one yard used a crane and a frame to which slings were mounted. Was not a problem and haulout \ splash was routine.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I should go over to the marina and see the crane in action. My concern is the support slings returning to one central point and compressing the hull.

So long as the bar is wide enough. We had a C310 try to use the club's bar. It wasn't long enough for the 310's beam and caused some damage. The owner had to have a wider one made and some significant 'glass work done. The club reimbursed him on the cost of the beam so now many of us use it to take the compression of the straps off.

They will most likely use a set of spreaders, to keep the lifting cables from pinching the hull.

If that Marina is San Rafael I have used them and would do so again

Thanks for the reply. Yes it’s San Rafael. I’ve heard good things about them and also they allow you to work on your own boat.
So you hauled a similar vessel and presumably they had a spreader for the lift cables/slings to reduce strain on the hull. Is that correct?

In 2015 when we had a bottom job and the topsides painted the rule was you arranged for all the work yourself. The marina only does the haul, wash, set and splash. I found them to be very nice to deal with, for example they gave me a free ride to the bus station after I had delivered the boat. They took a lot of care, especially on the launch, putting paper between slings and hull to protect the new paint. They do use spacers so the boat "feels" the same as it would on a travel lift.

We have a 37 foot Cherubini Hunter

We do 200 boats a twice a year with 3 cranes haulout and launch no prblems whatsoever .Just make sure the spreader bar they are using is wide enough that the slings are pulling straight up not pulling in as noted above can put the squeeze on the hull

Thank you all for the information and handholding. Now I can move forward with greater confidence.
