I recently received my first launching bill and was shocked. They are charging $200 for hauling, $150 for the crane, and then 6 hrs labor on top of that. This is for a 25ft Hunter by the way. To me the $200 & $150 seem high, but the acceptable. The 6hrs labor was a shock. I assumed the fees included labor. Am I off base here.

haul and launch fees

I believe the last haul out and pressure cleaning plus one coat of bottom paint was 1900 dollars, (46ft boat), and to me this seems expensive. They wanted to charge me 5hrs labor at 80 dollars and hour for sanding, I told them no. They also claimed 5gal of paint for 2 coats, and wanted about 400 dollars to do the running gear. It ended up being a confrontation which was not much fun.

Hi David, five gallons!? I used a roller on...

our last bottom job, put on three good coats with two gallons. Sounds like a rip off to me. Terry

Every yard I've ever used...

...charges by the foot to haul, not by the hour. And pressure washing has always been included as part of the package.

crooks

You're dealing with crooks. My yard (Aqualand in Atlanta) charges $10 per foot ($9 if have a slip there) for in and out. Thats $5 per foot each way. Pressure washing the bottom was $2-3 per foot and a mast drop was $50 down and $50 to put it back up. There was no extra labor charge.

you used a crane for that little mast and paid someone to trailer it? Did you lose the factory trailer?

I was quoted...

...$330 to haul, block and powerwash a 28-foot, 9,000 sailboat. This was "round trip" (back into the water is included) at one of the more fancy pants marinas on the Chesapeake Bay. Methinks you got burned...

Ask About Cost First

I have my own shop and deal with the automotive repair industry. Not the same as a marina, but. We make it a policy to tell the customer UP FRONT, BEFORE any work is done, what any and all cost for whatever the customer is requiring. Not that you did not do this before you started the project. It is pretty much the same here on the MIssissippi River where sailboats are a very small population, but the price seems high for whatever you want done. If you go from the St. Louis, MO area up the Mississippi and Illinois to Lake Michigan for instance, you will pay a $350.00 fee for taking the mast down. Then in Chicago depending on who you call, a $400. to $500. fee for putting it back up again. Then of course if you bring it back, you repeat the process fees to come back down river. But I agree, that was a little high. Robert River Sailing??

Brian

Brian, that little mast almost took my buddies shoulder off...we did a manual mast raise last year but had some mussle help.. this year we had a rookie and almost got some serious injuries, so we opted for the crane..also our mast foot is missing a pivot bolt so its a bit dicey raising the mast...give me your number and i'll call you next spring for a raisin! :)
