I learned from my question on another forum site that my car (6 cyl. ford taurus wagon) is undersized to haul the 22' Catalina that I am refurbishing over the winter. I need to trailer this boat about 4 hrs over paved roads, moderate terrain. Any suggestions on the size/type of vehicle I should be using? Any idea of the approx. weight of the boat and trailer?

Pickup

I have a Silverado 1/2 ton eight cyl. It works real well, I hardly know the boat is behind me. Sometimes no a good thing though for it is wider than my truck! The guy I bought it from had a small SUV and it worked for him.

over hill and dale

I have a 96 ford 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive with a 6 cylinder standard and to me this is the minimum I would use - it aint just the pullin - you gotta be able to stop as well - cars and trucks have their own legal towing limits - check with ford. good luck

towing

I used to tow my C-22 with a Chevy Astro van. The boat weighs about 2500 lbs, plus the trailer and OB motor and any gear could easily make it about 3500 lbs. The Astro has a towing capacity of about 5000 lbs, but I wouldn't want to tow that much. Otherwise you get into SUVs which are expensive.

stay within safety limits

I would advise you stay within the vehicle manufacturer's limits for towing although there are many cases of people getting away with lesser vehicles. Everyone else in the traffic is presuming you are being responsible. My tow vehicle is a '94 std Pathfinder 3.0 V6 and while it does not struggle with a C-22, I feel it is at the limit: It holds highway speed, will climb a hill, brakes well, and does not overheat.

Tow the C-22

L Masters; I towed my C-22 with a '71 El Camino with air shocks. It did all right. A friend towed his with a Toyota 4X4 (for the ramp) truck with the 2.2R engine. It did fine, also. The boat and trailer weigh less than 3000 pounds and don't need brakes in CA. I took the rusted brakes out of mine.

Don't forget the ramp

No matter how well it works over the road, your tow vehicle must be able to pull your boat and trailer up off the ramp at the end of the day. This is where low-end torque and traction are really important. With a smaller vehicle, a tow rope and chocks can be really helpful if you have to deal with a difficult ramp. Good luck. Catalina towing wt.

I had a 22' Macgregor with a swing keel that was about 3000 lbs. with all the gear and the trailer. I bet the Cat is little bit heavier, because it's better built. Paul
