Haul Out

Busy day today. I had Strider hauled for bottom wash, zinc replacement, and rudder check.

The bottom was so clean that washing was un-necessary and probably would have done more harm than good. It's amazing how clean even a paint of mid level effectiveness like the VC 17M I use stays when the boat moves (a lot) nearly every day. Ten days in fresh water also probably helped by killing off all the salt water critters.

The rudder looked fine but the haul out wasn't wasted since I found the lower gudgeon fitting loose. It's been tight since I had the boat. Tightening up the screws fixed it. The ends of the machine screw extended through the bronze casing far enough that I was able to put S.S. acorn nuts and lock washers on them to help the fitting stay tight.

The boat is now fully fueled, water tanks topped off, ice box and head cleaned. I just have to load clothes, ice, and food and she's ready to go aside from loading software on the new boat computer.

I've got a couple days of shore things to take care of but the weather is right in tune with those plans.

What software are you loading-nav ?

Garmin Mapsource for use with my Blue Charts. Route planning at the comfort of the cabin table in the evening with the bigger screen is more convenient and less error prone than standing at the chart plotter. I have a computer plug under the chart plotter.

I also carry Maptech Ocean Navigator Lite (comes free with chartbooks) for back up and to be able to read free downloadable NOAA charts. This will be more important down south where channels shift and shoal more than they do up here in the land of granite.

Many times while coming North this year both Maptech Offshore Navigator on my laptop and My Garmin 3206 showed us traveling on the channel bank, and not in the channel, you have to follow the markers and use your eyes on the water.

Hey Roger,

I want to ask about your rudder issue. The lower rudder mount being loose. I have the same issue on my Endeavour 32. I have about 1/8 - 1/4 inch on play in the lower mount. I knew of the issue but wanted to get through the season. You said you were able to tighten it by adding a nut to the bolt. My screws are flush with the starboard side mounting plate. The mount is made up of 2 plates screwed together. Do you know if there is a bushing that may be worn out? Or should I just try to tighten the screws to remove the play? Maybe there are some other Endeavour owners that have or had the some problem.
