Anyone know of the do's and don'ts of haul out w/ a fork lift? Seems a bit chancy to me but wanted all your input. The boat is 25' TIA for your help.

Mariner Fork Lift?

Clark: I assume that the Fork Lift is a Mariner unit. The have long round forks and can actually pick up a boat below grade (like off a sea wall! These are perfectly fine for lighter boats (like most 25-27 and smaller boats). The people that operate them usually know what they will handle. This is how they store most small power boats in the indoor storage racks.

Fork Lift damage

Be sure you check out the fork lift before they try to lift your boat. Small power boats with flat chines may be OK , but I've seen one yard lift a sailboat and since there wasn't much surface area actually touching the forks, you could hear cracking sounds as they started to pick it up. Fortunately they stopped.

Some Have Straps Also

Not sure I would try it with just the forks. The way the hull is curved there would be alot of weight on a small part of the hull.

Use straps.

Rick is right, straps are a must for a sailboat. Our marina has a large rack shed and uses the forks for all the powerboats. But every small sailboat I have seen lifted has been with the straps. Many sailboats have a marking along the toerail for proper strap placement. Usually where there is a bulkhead. On my boat that is just in front of the keel(bulkhead at the v-berth) and at the companionway/bridgedeck.
