I have just recently purchased a Hunter 31. During the survey I noticed that I have about a season left on my bottom paint. This is the first boat that I've had to do a bottom job on. I know that this is a pretty general question, but I do have a budget to work with. Can anyone tell me the ball park figure for doing a haul out and bottom job. I know there are a lot of variables, but I just need to get an idea of what you guys are paying to have it hauled, cleaned and painted. Thanks in advance for your help.

Call Marina in your Area

Every marina has different price, you need to go shopping for a price like I did calling all the area marina's in my area until I was happy with the price. It was $500 but that was just the complete bottom paint job, haul out is not included in that price,I winter store same place so haul out was already in the winter store charge for my 290. I would like to know how you do,I will be moving to port charlotte and mostlikely keeping my boat in charlotte harbor area. nick

short haul

In my local area (CT.) they are getting about $12 a foot for a "short haul" (1o days)This includes cleaning the bottom, setting the boat on stands and relaunching.Paint and materials should be no more then $150 pre coat for a do it yourself job.If your have the yard do it total cost comes closer to $35 per foot plus hauling out charge.I spend half a day sanding and preping and another half a day to put the paint.

1 Gallon of paint per coat

If you are planning to do it yourself, plan on 1 gallon of paint per coat to do the job on your boat. Paint types vary in cost. IMHO, an ablative paint would be the way to go (~$135/gal). If you are converting from the standard Fiberglass Bottomkote (Interlux name), then it has to be stripped and, ideally, three coats of ablative will do the trick. The first coat should be your "marker" coat and of a different color than coats 2 and 3.

The best advice has already been given. Do some "dialing for dollars" and look for the off season specials. But here's some more specifics: I just looked up the invoice from the last time I had my H31 hauled (Apr 2004). To haul and re-launch $248. Power wash the bottom $62 (incl the environmental fee). Wet sand and bottom prep $200. Brush on Trinidad SR (paint & labor) $410. So if you want to save yourself the effort of sanding and painting, it's about $600 here on the Left Coast. - Richard S/V Discovery

Gasparilla Marina

Check with Fort Myers Yacht at Gasparilla Marina, 698-1144. They offer yards at Placidia and Fort Myers where they do the work and the Charlotte Harbor location where you can do your own work. Check their web site: http://www.fortmyersyacht.com/services.html They have a price list on-line. I used them last year with good results. They still may be very busy repairing hurricane damaged boats. My boat has been awaiting repair in St Petersburg since September. Bill
