Haul or Not

I'm told I should haul our Vision 32 every year or two. Our bottom job is now 4 years old and we haven't hauled the boat since then..but the bottom looks good. We have a diver clean it every 60 days.. Do I need to haul the boat even though the bottom is clean? The boat is kept at Pensacola Beach, Fl.

Why?

If you have a diver, if the bottom is good, if you exercise the through hulls regularly, and if you keep zincs on and changed when needed, and if your diver or you inspect the bottom once in a while, why? In California, its really hard to get over three years even with a diver, but I believe the paint here is not as potent. I used to get four to five when I did my own bottom jobs with old-formula paint. Rick D.

I'd agree.

Howard: I would have to agree with Rick. If you have a diver scrubbing the bottom, and checking the zincs and general bottom condition, why pay for a pull and a paint job. This is just a way to keep the yard in the green.

On the other hand ..

I've always been told that you should haul a boat (up here for the winter) every 2 years or so to give it an opportunity to "dry out". Head this first hand from a long term sailor who bought a brand new IP 45 (mega bucks.) As I understand it, all fiberglass boats actualy absorb some water, albeit miniscule amounts. Unless, of course, there are blisters which would mean more water. That said, my boat hasn't sat out a winter in a few years for various reasons. This year it's either going to Florida or on the hard (latter due to advice above.)

Don't think that a haul out is going to dry it.

Don: I do not think that hauling a boat for a day or two is going to make ANY difference in the hull drying out. My boat has been in the water for 15 years (only hauled for bottom jobs) and we have about 10-12 blisters. By the way. I just opened my water tank ('85 H'31) up for the first time in 15 years. It was leaking around the seal. The tank is molded into the hull liner (so it is made of fiberglass with gelcoat). The tank had a very fine coat of silt from the well water that we have been putting in it for the past 15 years but there were NO blisters in this tank.

Type of Paint

What kind of paint are you using. I thought that 3 years was good with Trinidad SR and frequent scrub jobs. All that used beer from Banana Bobs must keep the fouling down. hi hi

Trinidad & PegLegs

It's Trinidad paint, and the beer's from Peg Leg Pete's, the diver is "Bottom Dwellers" in Pensacola

we get about 2 years on the Atlantic side...

of Florida, using the same paint (2 coats, 3 at waterline) and having a diver clean the bottom every 60 days. Howard, you're doing something right..or you have a very dedicated diver who likes to scrub and scrape long after the paint has quit working.
