Our hatch on our 25' Hunter is currently a homemade, wooden one. We would like to replace it with one that will lock for security. Can someone please recommend a place to get these? Steve Hall S/V Helen Highwater

Call Jeff for a hatch

Call Jeff at the Thrifty Mariner at 813-390-7474 or 813-234-1378. He may have a replacement, if not go up on the Bomar web site they brought out Grey Industries. I know they do not have a replacement but have a replacement that will require some work. Hunter will give you a model number. Frank McGurk

I assume that you are talking about compionway!

Steve: I assume that you are talking about the companionway slider/hatch? I do not think that anyone other than a boat junk yard is going to have anything for your boat. These are pretty much custom made by the mfg. You could go to a shop and see if they could reproduce what you have in fiberglass or redo a wood one. I believe that the one on your boat is actually a replacement of the original. I have not ever seen a wood one on any Hunter

Call Jeff

Steve Call Jeff or Bomar/Grey Industries (original hatchmaker bought out by Bomar) They have a replacement but will require cutting because they no longer make a trapozial hatch. Please call Mike at Hunter to confirm. Frank

Lewmar Ocean 60.

I installed a Lewmar Ocean 60 hatch over my V-berth... It cost quite a bit, but it was worth it for me to have a dry place to sleep. You can order the hatch through any of the major discount marine stores (West Marine, Boat/US, Defender, Boater's World, etc). There are two versions of the Ocean 60 hatch- One with a lip that fits into a cut-out in your deck, and the other that screws onto the surface of your deck without the lip. As the hatch is square and the hole is a trapezoid, I used the one without the lip (and saved about $20, if I remember correctly). The hinges and latches fit inside the cut-out in the deck with no additional cutting or fiberglass work. Removing the frame from the old hatch was the hardest part of installing the new one. I think I posted message about the procedure, sometime around June of last year... Check the archives. Good luck! --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Jon, may I presume!

Jon: May I presume that you just screwed the new rectangular/square hatch to the deck over the old opening? If you have any pictures of this it may be interest to those with the same dilemma. You can post them on the photo forum.

Correct, Steve...

All the hinge and latching hardware on the hatch fits into the opening, so I didn't have to do any special cutting or fiberglass work to get a good seal. The only way you can tell it's not the hatch that came with the boat is by looking into the open hatch from the deck- and even then, you don't really notice that the front end of the hatch is a little wider than the hole it covers. I still need to clean up the area around the hatch, but I plan to post pictures soon after that. This is a popular question about the H25 and H27 (they use the same trapezoid hatch up front), so I figure I should show folks the solution that worked for me! --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Jon, that was a great idea!

Jon: That was a great idea. This subject has come up many times and I have never heard what other owners have done. Did not even realize that they made hatches than did not have the lip to fit in the opening. Looking forward to your picture expose!
