Would like to know if replacing our 3" Lewmar passive hatch vent with a 3" Nicro Solar would really make that much of a difference? The Nicro internal fans look cheap or more like a kids toy and was wondering how well they work.

Anyhow before I drop the cash would like any comments or suggestion on ways to improve ventilation reduce humidity.

Thanks

If you can assemble then make your own vents. Buy a Nicro cowl vent and install a computer fan and a dedicated solar panel. Yes they make a complete difference. 24 cubic feet of air per minute will change the air in your cabin several times each day. fans may also be placed in spaces that don't have good ventilation. they are nearly silent and run for years with no trouble.

4" solar

I have have a 4'' solar in my H-36 and had them in my other sailboats also and as soon as enter the boat it smells so fresh.
Not to take away from making your own which I tried and it sits home and the Nicro are worth the money because they are compact and work great and no wires coming from the hatch and pretty easy to install with hole saw and don't leak, mine has built in off and on switch,I love them and will be adding a second one.
Go for it you won't be sorry stainless or plastic.

Cooling fans

Here is my solution to ventilation. 4 12VDC computer fans mounted on a plexiglass that is cut to fit a vent. It has as 110VAC to 12VDC adaptor so it runs when shore power is plugged in. It is removable. On the opposite side there is a filter so that dust does not blow in. I leave the V birth hatch cracked so that the incoming air can leave the boat. These 4 fans are located on a hatch just above the galley stove. I must add that I have a dodger so this hatch is inside the dodger - so if it rains I will not have any water coming in.

Re: Cooling fans

The view from the deck:

The view in the cabin:

The view of a fan in the "V"berth:
The fan in the V berth is on the port side and there is a vent on the starboard side to exhaust the air. This is for the space under the berth.

If you like the "KISS" principle, check out the ss version of the Beckson vents.
I put two of those on our 34 footer about 15 years ago. No electrics to fail. They just work.
Never a musty odor when we open up the boat, and we live in a very rainy and damp climate.

We have one for the aft head compartment and one for the aft cabin.
Model No. - C-6SS

Any little amount air flow over the boat will slurp air out of them. No electrical hassles and no rain or spray leaks. They do not snag lines, either.
One of the best return-on-investment ideas we have used.
