Hatch Tent

I have found that having a hatch tent for a boat is really nice when you are out cruising. I have made a few in the past and for my other boat.

Usually I make them with a lot of overlap. That way you can have the front hatch open in rainy conditions, even with wind. The benefit is ventilation on a warm day. It is also nice when it is sunny to keep heat out of the boat.

Today I started fabricating a new hatch tent for the Compac 23. I did it blind, not being near the boat. I am hoping that this tent works and I don't have to mess with it much but it was a cheap project.

I think that it may be a little big. Who knows, but it is about 45" wide (A frame type tent) and about 46" long. There is a cut out in the back that is about 3" wide and 4" long, rounded, as to go around the mast. It is a half moon so it will go about 2/3 the way around and then some cord will attach above the sail cover area to keep the high end up on the rear. The front has 3 loops, one in the middle and two on the sides. The front loop goes to the furled jib with a cord to keep the front high end up. The back and front sides will tie off somewhere on the deck (shrouds and front pulpit bottom).

Anyway, with those dimensions, who thinks that it will fit?

Also, I used Duck fabric and then used a whole can of Scotchguard on it. I didn't have any sunbrella sitting around and that stuff is crazy expensive these days. I wonder if that will waterproof it. Any thoughts?

Scotch guard does not last long, go to YOU TUBE and see a clip about waterproofing canvas. Requires Bee wax and candle wax, some brushes and a heat gun.

I just bought 30 yards of 60" sunbrella for $125 ( plus the governor's cut). Thick, polyurethane coated inside, Pacific blue. I got it at one of those salvage stores. I've also seen Surlast and Topgun on Ebay for only-sightly-more-than-reasonable prices. Keep your eyes peeled off season and be ready . . . to get permission from the Admiral to strike.

Weathermax 80 is an option for UV resistant, water resistant marine fabric.

I got a yard for my hatch cover for $13.50 at leesailcovers.com. A quick google look shows prices from $13.00/yd for 100 yards on eBay, to under $15.00 other places.

Knowing how canvas can mildew, as I observed on my own Taylor Made cotton/polyester blend motor covers, I dunno that I would use cotton canvas on a boat anymore, well, given synthetic fabrics such as Sunbrella or Weathermax.
