Acrylic hatches on my Beneteau are scratched and cracked and need replacement. Anyone do it yourself? If so, any tips are welcome. Or is it smarter to just remove the cover and send to manufacturer. Suggestions?
if you can remove the hatch and from the under side you can fuse the crack together with a soldering iron, being carefull not to get too ambichious as you move the iron between the two parts,...it will hold and then you might take the hatch to a windshield repair specialist and he can then fill in the imperfections....
I change all the acrylic glass on my C30 the stuff was cheep about $180 dollers the glass color on a C30 is dark bronze .It looks brown in the shop but turns black on the boat .It cuts with a jig saw and sands with a sander .You can use a roughter and copy the pieces but my glass did not fit very good to start so i made new ones.I glued the glass with black silicone but they sell special acrylic sealer for the stuff .silicone works ok on GRP but its not so good on ALuminum.Tape around the frame then glue the glass, then use a spoon to smooth out the sploooooge.Let the sploooge skin over and peel the tape ,then peel the paper off the new glass.I cut 4 ports 3 hatches and 4 windows in 3hrs and glued them in about 31/2.The hard part is geting the old stuff off the boat@ frames .I used a soft 11/2" wire wheel on a drill.watch the gellcoat.New windows are great.
