have a 78 Hunter 30. 1/2" LEXON companionway boards and the fiberglass sliding cover, no turtle over it. I'm looking for a nice looking and effective locking device with a key. any ideas? Tks

Do you have to have a key?
For years I have used combination locks for the companionway and it has come as a blessing at unexpected times when I did not foresee I would need to get access to the boat and thus would not have carried the key. It is also great when you lock up the boat at anchor and take off in the dingui without having to worry about a key especially if all you are wearing a bathing suit. You can also share the combination with members of your party if someone decides to return early to the boat with out having to part with the key. I think you are looking for an integrated lock but I do not know of any with a combination. There is a hasp with an integrated key lock which sells at chandleries for about $20. None of these locks are intended to secure a boat as anyone with a screwdriver could get access in seconds. They are mostly intended as stament that the boat is private property and the owner does not want anyone to have access. Hope this info helps.

Dead Bolt
I used an old-style dead bolt like the one in the link. The price is right and it allows you to lock the hatch from the outside or the inside. I mounted the big part with the key on the top hatch board, on the inside, with the key side out and the bolt facing up. I screwed and glued a piece of teak block to the sliding hatch just the right size to mount the other piece so it would match up with the bolt. It looks good and is very secure and I really like that I can lock it from the inside.
