How in the world does the forward hatch disassemble so I can try to reseal it? It's a 1990 Capri 26. OR! Should I just silicone around the trim at the top of the hatch. The water leaks in at the top. I also have drips off of the through bolts on the top of cabin hand rails. The boat has only been in lake water. Ideas? thanks.

capri26 handhold leaks

I have a 1990 capri26 hull#50. Last year I developed a small leak in one of the cabin top handrail thru bolts. I believe the correct way is to completely remove both handrails this winter, refisish them and reinstal in the spring. Be sure to clean out the old holes, and I would recommend rebedding them with 100% marine silicone. (5200 makes it difficult to ever remove them again!) As to your front hatch problem, the only problem I have had is a small leak thru the handle bolts, which was cured with a simple tightening of the center thru bolt. good luck Dave

If one of the thru bolts is leaking the rest will soon. Capri 26 Leaks

My starboard chainplate leaked. I removed it, cleaned the hole with acetone and rebedded with marine silicone. Problem solved. I also removed the teak handrails and refinished with Cetol. I rebedded them. No leaks.

Handhold Replacement

I replaced my teak handholds with after market plastic ones. I had to use two single and one double handhold per side, but I eliminated the need to clean and oil the teak ones, and they look good too. I did not have to drill new holes in the cabin top. I re-used the existing holes by lining up the new handles with the old holes. I had to use three handles per side as the plastic after market ones won't bend the way the teak ones did. I put the double one aft and the two single ones in the center and forward. I seated them in 3M 4200 as it stays a little softer and is not as permanent as 5200. I too used Cetol on the rest of my teak and it looks great and is not a big maintenance problem like oil or varnish.

How to rebed deck hardware

I am a Catalina 25 owner but am looking to buy a Capri 26,Great boat.To rebed deck fittings so they don,t leak the best way is to remove, clean deck and fitting, countersink the deck so it will accept more silicone and use good quality marine silicone. Some people don,t tighten the fitting completely until the silicone has had a chance to cure, then tighten it the rest of the way assuring all the silicone won,t sqeeze out. Good luck

Handrail leaks

I had the same problem with my handrails. I removed them, cleaned the rails and the holes, applied a marine vinyl caulking and reattached them loosely. After the caulking dried I cinched the bolts tightly and haven't had a problem since. I would recommend against taking off the handrails and leaving them off through the winter, unless the boat is going to be stored indoors. You don't want water or ice getting leaking through unplug holes during the winter.
