Hatch Latches ... can you tighten them?

We are just about to buy a '91 37.5 (moving up from a 28.5), the survey is being done on Thursday, and the latches on the hatches on boat we are looking at are not 'tight' ... with the latches completely closed, there is still play in the hatch, and pushing the hatch up from the inside it opens very slightly. I know, therefore, that in any real sea, the water is going to come in by the gallon. Is there any way of tightening these latches? Thanks. (something tells me we're going to have a few more questions).

Rubber Seal

Check the rubber seals around the hatches. If they are compressed, then new seals will probably correct the problem. This is not an unusual situation. The same thing could apply to opening portlights as well. Good luck, hope this suggestion makes for an easy fix.

Mine have shim washers

but those will not always correct the play. Some required me to fill the mounting holes with epoxy and redrill them for a tight fit. There are probably better latches but I haven't really looked. If you come across something better, please let us know.

Same Problem

I have a 35.5 with the same problem. Your right, they leak during heavy rains when the gutter can not empty the water fast enough. If you find a fix, please email @ Ronald.Land@SPR.DOE.GOV
