I want to remove the hatch knobs (Bomar) that are attached to the lifting part (the ones who secure to the part that is on the deck
They have a small pin through them; how does that get removed?
Do you knock them out with something equally thin?
Didn't want to mess around and then find out I did something wrong, or worse even, break them.
Anyone ever taken them off?
Please send the 7th to my rescue once more!

You are probably correct about the pins, but why remove the knobs? Are they broken, are you painting, or what?

I have this one that does look a little scruffy, and want to replace it with a great looking one I got from the yard.
And while on the subject of painting: what paint should I use for the hatches?
They are Bomar, and black in colour; should I sparay them (after masking up all the surrounding are, of course?

Yeah, I did mine after the lenses were replaced with 3/8, smoke tinted plexiglass, by a local glass company. I had them leave the protective paper on the outside face of the plexi so I could paint without masking. I then sanded the frames with 120 and 200 grit wet sand paper, washed with water and cleaned with acetone and then spray painted with black semi-gloss out of a spray can. They look new after 2 years.

Have Fun.

Back to my original question:How do you remove the pins?
By hitting them with something very thin?
Are they re-usable?

I used a "nail set" with a pointy end. Tap it with a small hammer and pull it out with pliers sfrom the other end. Any small nail would also work. Save it and re-use it.

Jorge:

Seems that there are as many paint favorites as there are people who paint.

My favorite non marine paint for exterior use on the boat and around home is Rustoleum's Hammered finish paints. It's metallic and designed to produce a mottled look high gloss finish. Doesn't leave brush marks. Encapsulates rust. Self priming. Comes in several colors. Available at Home Depot. (The product also comes in spray cans. I have found however that the result is just as good with a brush.) Besides the hatch cover frames and the port frames, I've "Hammered" over the little bit of decorative exterior teak that's still left on my boat. Much easier to maintain than marine varnishes.

The attached pic was soon after the painting of my ports. Three years on, they still look much the same. The finish is slowly oxidizing off, but with a rub of a cloth, a semi-gloss shine returns and the paint still covers all the underlying frame. The paint hasn't peeled or flaked at all. Painting again will be a simple matter rubbing with a Scotch pad to clean off the oxidation and rough the surface.

Rardi,
Thanks for responding with suggestions: it sounds like a nice paint, easy to use
I have come to the point now where, even though the boat is not ready to sail, I can finish these small things
I want to install 2 winches on the cabin top, I re-fabricated 4 stanchions for SB side (using the original bases but new stainless, all with compliments of the salvage yard); then I need to install 2 organizers, and am all set
Just got my jib today (I converted one from a roller furler to a hanks on jib), and just acquired a jib bag from e-bay
Was lucky to find a snuffer (of course I will probably never use it, but for $50.00 I will give it a try. It is brand new) Ialso got a storm sail, will use that also
My main sail comes from the yard, from a similar H33, aptly called Obseession; I kept the sail cover with the engraving to remind me to stay obssessed!
Next week I should be able to install the stanchions and all the above so excitment is running at a fever pitch here
I pat myself in the back to have got this far, with no knowledge at all of boats
Cannot thank enough the mob who keeps responding to my questions: would not have done what I have
Thank yo all for that. Sam, if you read this, I am awaiting to get you what you asked, just haven't seen a good one yet

Jorge: Yes excitement and satisfaction mounts when making good progress towards a goal. Yours however seems to be more of a project boat than mine was. I envy your salvage yard access. Must be fun.

Re the Hammered finish for trim stuff. One item that I forgot to mention is that occasionally, when painting under full sun, the paint will skim dry first on the surface and then because the volatiles can't escape from underneath, blister bubbles will form. This mainly occurred when I've used it on wood. But should you go with the Hammered, suggest that you do it towards the end of the day when the surface has cooled and no sun, or better yet wait for a day that's cloudy but no rain.

Now off to a Mother's Day brunch.

Good point noted!
Today was a perfect day to do it, but I am still recovering from what happened to me on Friday: being the day I take off to work on the boat, I stopped at my office to pick up the 2 winches I intend installing on the cabin top; I serviced them, and have them perfect; I was at the office no more than 2 minutes, but that's all it took for someone to break the passenger window, and stel my blu pouch where I carry Driver's licence, check books and credit cards. My heart sank, and spent the rest of the day cancelling all the above, so any desire to go work on the boat was dissipated.
But I went there today, and felt much better.
Now this is how you can help: look at the new posting under the heading : Cabin Top Winches
Regards to all
Jorge
