Hatch gasket

I own a 1977 Pearson 28. I need a new gasket for the original hatch. The hatch cover is fiberglass as is the base. It appears that the original gasket was fairly thin rubber about 3/4 to 1 inch wide glued on or with an adhesive backing. I think rubber or synthetic material is what I want. I can only find foam rolls. I don't know if this will suffice. Where can I get something that will work?

I would first look to the auto supply stores for weather strip and try to find something that comes close.

Ross is right I got mine at Pep Boys. Not cheap $13/10' roll. Self adhesion works well.

Good call Frank but they don't usually list this kind of stuff on their website. Call the number and ask for Rudy. He is their Pearson guru.

...or use some common PVC closed cell foam tape that can be bought at any good HW store. That is exactly what I used on the hatch on my '76 Pearson 28. It is adhesive on one side. The key is to get the stuff with good compression recovery. Some tapes colapse and do not recover very well. I will defer to Maine Sail to write up a complete thesis with accompanying photos;)

Try an auto parts junkyard. Try the gasket either around the trunk or one of the doors, worked for my forward hatch cover. Its been about 5 years no
leaks yet.

I am not sure the trunk gasket idea would work on the P28. The original gasket is up inside the hatch lid where it contacts the raised opening. Both are flat horizontal surfaces. Also, I am not sure the gap around the edge of the hatch is uniform not to mention the break at the hinges.
