hatch cover My 28 O'day along with many O'day models does not come with a cover over the companion way hatch. This would be the cover which attaches to the deck or is molded to the deck so that when you stand on it there is no pressure on the hatch slides and would, I suppose, keep green water from getting under the leading edge of the sliding hatch. I have, at one time, heard it called a "storm hatch". I have seen some screwed to the deck. I would like to find one that fits my O'day if there is such a thing out there to be had. If anyone knows where such things are available I'd appreciate that information. Thanks, Mike

Mike, I doubt "Caseville" is anywhere near Wickford, Rhode Island, or I would send you to the great consignment shop they have there, with lots of old hatches made of wood and fiberglass from various boats. I think, though, that all of the used hatches of this kind I've ever seen have been very heavy and you will probably do better to make your own out of Star Board. The 3/4 inch thickness, which would be expensive (perhaps $120 for a hatch-size piece) would be safest for one that crew must stand on; otherwise the 1/2 inch would be fine. The ones I've seen cruisers make with a curved top seem to be made from sheet metal. You would have to develop your own attachment system, possibly including wooden sliding rails.

Mike, If you call the phone numbers on their web site (link below) and give him your dimensions the owner of Wickford Marine Consignment will probably be willing to fish around among his hatches and see if he has anything that might fit your bill. I saw both fiberglass and a couple of wooden hatches there last weekend that may fit a 28-footer (but look like they came from a 24-25 footer). Shipping might be expensive, but you probably guessed that. They also have a massive supply of regular plexy clear hatches and portlights, many of them in quite nice condition. I think they have everything there you would need to build a boat from the bottom up...

UV film
I just ordered a roll of UV film to use as my hatch covers. It says it cuts out 99% of UV rays and 70% of heat. We'll see. 2'x15' cost $36 including shipping. If it works and hold up, it will be great...no more having to take off covers and putting them back on.
