I am looking for 1/4 inch teak to bond with some marine plywood to replace
the cockpit hatch covers. Constantine's has it for $17.40 per square foot.
Does anyone know where else I could get it or 1/2 inch teak plywood? Dave
Fuchs, were you satisfied with the hatch cover replacements that Steve sent
you?

Yes, The Hatch Boards that Steve sent were perfect. And Expensive $310.00
for the set. I replaced my seat covers with Marine Plywood. I have
cushions over them anyway and they are not normally seen.

Hi-

Try ML Condon. I purchased a bunch of Cedar for a dink a few years ago, and
they had or could get practically anything that grows on the planet...
Their contact data follows.

Just a note about the hatch covers. They are made from teak-faced ply which is very, very expensive here in the UK. I think David also had the hatch cover surround which are made from solid teak as well. I know they are not cheap but I am sure you will agree the workmanship etc is first class.

I now have a wood man that is making all the Vega stuff locally. Within the next few months I hope to have prices at a more reasonable level for all of us.

I hope this helps in some way to explain the pricing of the double sided teak faced ply pieces.

Kind Regards to all Vega owners worldwide

Hi Florance,
I found a local company that sells teak lumber and plywood when I
replaced the locker covers. The lumber goes for $14 per board
foot. It cost me about $70 for a 1"x6"x10'. They had wider boards at
$18/board foot. I think 1" is the smallest they carry. The 1/2" double
sided teak faced plywood is $95 for a 4'x8' sheet. I'm not sure how
these prices compare to other areas. I called to see if the company
ships. Answer: "only in truck loads." If these prices are
exceptional, I don't mind ripping some pieces down with my circular
saw to your spec.s and shipping them to you. On a side note, the last
time I bought lumber the clerk with says with a smirk "Go make some
more sawdust." I used a surface planer to get the boards to uniform
thickness and when I was done I had what looked like about $25 worth
of shavings on the floor. Company contact: Atlantic Veneer Mill

The West Marine catalog lists teak lumber; 1/2" and other thickness. Teak is
very expensive. When I replaced my cockpit hatches I used Honduras Mahogany,
which is about 1/4 the cost of teak. However you have to be religious about
keeping the varnish in good condition, because unlike teak, it weathers
badly if uncoated.

Most large cities have stores catering to woodworking hobbyists. These
frequently sell various types of uncommon wood. Try the Yellow Pages. You
might also look in the woodworking magazines. There are usually some
advertisements by wood suppliers. However, the West Marine price is not far
out of line for small quantities of dimensional teak lumber.

Oops! Sorry, I hit "send" without typing a message.

I meant to say: Steve, thank you for providing such a great service. I thought about doing something similar, at least as far as the wood items go. all of the materials are available here in Hawaii due to the fact that this is the only place between San Diego and Australia where major re-fits can be handled. I have purchased everything from teak veneer plywood to 2"X12"X10' Sapele planks from local suppliers, and I've been told that sapele veneer can be had as well. Getting exotic wood products is not a problem. Of course the prices are heart stopping in some cases and the added cost of shipping to anywhere outside of the islands makes the whole idea impractical. I often dream of having a real woodworking shop where I could turn out cool stuff for the boat (Sigh). Perhaps after I move back to New England in a few years.

Aloha,

Chuck

Chuck, did you say that you could get sapele veneer? I was quoted a price
for quartered sapele that was really high. I still haven't decided whether
to use the 1/4 teak and bond to the 1/4 marine plywood yet. I wanted the
quartered grain look that resembles the original sapele.
Also, I was reading some more of the information that my Dad collected, he
never threw away any receipts or handbooks even if they were in Swedish! And
found the warranty for the 1990 Volvo Penta 2002 BT. Most of the mileage
cruising up and down the East Coast was done on the first engine. Does this
engine have the feathering of the propeller feature? I have this service
manual on the boat but I won't go over there until Monday.
