Hatch conversion--Anybody tried it?

I noticed in some pictures of an '82 model C22 that the forward hatch has been improved over the one in my '76 model. It actually opens through the forward slope of the coachroof, giving what looks like much better access. I was planning on replacing my hatch when I did some deck work anyway, and now I'm wondering if there is a kit out there to put this newer-type hatch in place. Has anybody tried doing this? How'd it go? Along more conventional lines, if I simply replace the flush-deck type hatch, any recommendations for a replacement model? I'd like something that is actually watertight and that is not prone to creating the sort of leaks into the deck core that caused all my deck problems in the first place. Thanks in advance, Rick Rose

82 model hatch

I have an 82 model C-22 which has the bow hatch configuration more or less the same as your 76. I beleive the hatch change was made later than 82. Nevertheless, I through bolted the hatch hinges through the deck down into the forward "sleeping area" of forecastle if you desire. That's about the extent of my improvements. I would like though to have an opauge hatch cover to let light in. Further, I don't think it is feasable to alter your boat to the new hatch design as the entire roof was redisigned to accept this hatch. Don't forget, your mast rests on top of the very area you would start cutting into.

You're right

You're right--the more I thought about it, the sillier it sounded. Kinda like those folks talking about doing fin keel conversions, etc. Heck, just buy another boat. I did find a link for some good hatch deals in the archives: www.thriftymariner.com Best, Rick
