We have a 2-piece hatchboard. The pieces stow nicely below. What's the problem?

We also have a single-piece screened hatchboard for when we stay aboard.

Some boat owners have solved the issue by a drop in "door" for when they're aboard.

my boat has a rack under the companionway steps -- look around and you may find a place to build one. Others have a bag made up to put them in. On my 23' we put them behind some cushions in the settee...... even if you have a custom door made up, you should carry the boards for bad weather.

I hate them too and with an aft cabin I have double trouble.....but installing doors was a good idea until I realized they'd be in the way of sitting in the cockpit cause someone is always hanging out right where the door would rest when open so I take the forward cabin hatch boards and stash them in the vee berth stuffing them against the hull and mattress so there snug and out of the way when my daughter sleeps and the aft cabin set gets a bungee around them against the side of the bed/locker and when just hanging out at the dock I put the forward and aft set stacked on top of the coach roof next to the opening

I feel your frustration! ... I just bought the hatch board stowage bag from this chandelry. I got the larger bag which stores 4 boards because our boards were just a little too long for the smaller bag. Besides, I have made a new board with a screen which is interchangeable with the board with the window so we have 4 boards in total. I have a place to mount the bag on the bulkhead of the aft berth, which is basically my storage area anyway.

It's hard to see what your problems with hatch boards may be. On my H28.5, I put the 4 teak boards into alternate folds of an old towel and then put them either in a shallow lazarette in the cockpit or a shelf in the cabin. Surely, an S-2 9.2 would have multiple places to stuff the boards and keep them out of the way.

Years ago I made a single board for the winter storage. While working on the boat during the off season I realized how much easier that single board is when going in and out. I continued to use that board until the Florida sun made a shambles out of it. Now I have started a new one. This one I will coat with epoxy in case I ever go to Florida again. And like someone else I have the single screen "door" also.

these boards i speek of are not on my s-2...they are on an allmand 35 that belongs to my boat buddy down in Fair Hope Al...my s-2 has a place for them built in lol but for some odd reason on his boat there is never a place to stow them ....they either end up lieing around the cockpit seats or up on the cabin top where they can slide off.....not sure what to do as of yet about this.....so for now i am playing musical boards all over the boat lol.....keep the input coming maybe there will emerage a solution to this problem ....lol

On my C310 I have a set of hatchboards (2pc) that are hinged, so they come in and out as one piece, can be folded into a smaller package for stowing and they don't slide away from each other when underway.

My friend's '86 Hunter 31 has a 4 piece set (that are beveled so they fit together nicely) that I have to lay out and organize if I'm securing his boat! I guess he's used to it but I'm tempted to throw them into the drink and say a flock of angry seagulls flew away with them!!

theses are the most annoying things i have ever encountered...what do you do with them when in port...for that mater sailing too....... and spending time in and out of the cabin and cockpit...
Oh, to answer your question, all 3 sets (yes, 3 sets, one solid, one with tinted plexiglass and one with a screen) get stowed in the aftmost port corner under the quarterberth cushion. The little boy doesn't take up that space as of yet!!

we replaced them with custom made doors that can be locked from the outside and the inside. They swing open into the cockpit and latch so they aren't flopping around when we are sailing

On my Hunter 31 I has a one-piece plastic that I stored in the quarter berth a short distance away.

On my Hunter 386 I keep these in place and step over them since the companion way door height is relatively short. No need to remove and store them. However, I do remove them and lay them on the cabin top in a soft low profile box next to the door when my greyhound needs to jumps into or out of the cabin.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I made a hatch board bag that snaps the the area behind the ladder. There are dividers between where the boards go in to keep the boards from dinging themselves.

Hey man, if you have one, could you post a photo of the boards. I am interested what you have because it sounds different then mine.

Thanks

To keep them from sliding around, you could wrap them in that nonskid shelving stuff that comes on a roll. Then at least they would stay stacked, and you could tuck them away someplace...before we built in a dedicated spot, this worked well for us.

If the boat has a sail locker in the cockpit, just wrap them in a towel and stow them there. They're hatchboards for cryin out loud, not precious stones.

Doesn't appear your buddy considers it as much a problem as you do.... But, like you, I sometimes find it annoying when a boat isn't squared away to my standards. And sometimes I'm a little defensive if someone comes on my boat a criticizes my set up... it's a thin line we walk sometime, eh?

The next time you go on the boat, just grab the hatchboards and store them in a logical place. Then a bit later you could casually say "Hey, I didn't want to damage your washboards accidently, knowing how expensive they are to replace, so I stowed them behind the _____________! " Never can tell, he might say "wow, that's a good idea, Thanks Woody!"

Have you priced a set of teak washboards lately. The newer production boats don't use teak for a reason....... their freakin' expensive! Frankly, though, I don't find them inconvenient at all. Mine are three pieces... and they are quite beautiful. Being in three sections makes them very easy to handle and find a place to stow.
