The one depicted shows a very fine mesh screen . Not all have that feature . Mudwasps and spiders are particularly fond of our boat for some reason

It does have a nice screen. I leave the vent open all the time (installed on the foredeck), have not had any issues with water intrusion. I also added screens to the cockpit and hatchboard vents last year to reduce wasps in the boat. I still get them under the boom cover, though.

Spiders are fond of all boats! Especially stowed biminis! Let me know if you have any good tips besides eviction

Here's an idea.... install the fans in the hatch board like you planned but attach the solar panel by a hinge (probably mounted on a board) so it can flip up to get some sun from what's likely a better angle.

If you look at solar vents you'll realize just how small the fans and solar panels are. Perhaps a similar fan could be mounted on the board along with a larger solar panel, and maybe a battery, to make up for the poor angle. You're on a mooring so at some point during the day, it's likely to get the right angle. A separate solar panel attached by a wire seems like its likely to break. Everything mounted on a the board would be much more robust in my opinion.

Mayhem, your suggestions are exactly why I posted this question here . I've considered attaching the solar panel to the hatch board it self .
I hadn't come to a convenient how to store the hatchboard when not in use. In my world this is known as "project creep" . One solution presents another project..

One project leads to another sounds like 99% of boat projects out there! I started working on this and found 10 other problems!

Another idea that comes to mind is to leave the solar on top of the sliding hatch and use magnetic connectors (plenty of Chinese USB cables with them) between the board and the hatch. Fumbling with a connector while trying to escape large waves doesn't sound fun.
