Our quarter-berth is used for storage of canvas, clothing, PFDs, and other soft items. The hatch boards wedge in nicely, standing on edge, on the inboard side. The outboard side is now used for storage of a 130w. solar panel.

I recently purchased 2 new smoke colored plexiglass hatch boards to replace my 1975 original
mahogany boards. I have a hanging locker with a raised up front that was original when the boat was built. I wrap the boards in a couple of towels and they wedge snugly on the floor of the hanging locker and cant move around. Comment: for the sailor that recommended leaving the bottom board in all the time; A good Idea for offshore work, but not necessary for coastal sailing (my opinion)

I've got three hatch boards. Me ... for our very frequent day sails in the rough, but never swell-into-cockpit conditions on San Francisco Bay, I just bring them up to the v-berth. Gently wedge them between the interior hull side and the v-berth cushions. Never had one fall out or move. Takes maybe 5 seconds more (for all three) each direction compared to a designated (but ugly) hatch-cover rack that might be constructed over my navigation table.
Or as also has been suggested, just put them under the salon cushions when sailing but also when not needed to prevent cockpit flooding.

On this S2, mostly the hatch boards are stored in a snuggle fitting space between the companionway steps and port settee. There're in an accessible location for the ever changing conditions on Lake Erie. If it is too rough for the boards to stay put, then there's no need to store the boards!
I have a bungie on the vertical of the starboard settee seat. I stack the 3 vertically behind the cord. Cat.25
I made a folding hatch cover which works great. It is easy to open and close and so far has never leaked in the worst of weather. Feel free to ask more questions but I think the pictures tell it all. I am also converting from Tiller to wheel on my 30' O'day and so far no problems, If you are also thinking of doing this and need help, let me know.

I have a slot in each cockpit locker where they go. One port, one starboard. This sit on edge and are never seen or in the way until needed. They are part of the storage platform built by the PO for each locker. Storage includes place for a cooler and battery one each side as well. In the photo you can see the slot to the left of the cooler. This is the starboard locker, looking forward.
correction: that's the port side looking aft. But looks the same on other side.

Boards to door?
This is kind of off the board idea. Although my way of dealing with them was to get clear of them all together and use a single sheet of plywood with a vent in it. Works good, keeps cabin super fresh but still has to be stored. So I’m thinking doors. I did have a question. Captainron 1, the doors you pictured. How were the joints specially cut or gasketed to prevent water driving in the crack?

I noticed a boat at the Marina had a screened two piece hatch that swung open side to side like saloon doors. Ive seen a few like that but this was the only one ive seen with screened hatches. They had a bimini top to keep the rain out. Not anything you would want in rougher waters or in theftville, but around here its probably fine.
I will have to take a better look in my lazerette. That would be a great place to store mine if there is room without interfering with the electrical system.

I was wondering, the way the hatch boards are cut on my boat. If you got knocked down the boat would be at 90deg from straight up. At that angle if one of 2 hatch boards were in place (the bottom one) wouldn't it just fall out of the slot it's in?Or would you need some kind of pin or pins to keep it in place? I have a 2001 catalina22 with 2 white plastic boards cut at an angle to match the V shape of the cabin entrance. They go in horizontally one on top of the other in a slot that matches the thickness of the boards.

I have a Tartan 27, Instead of hatch boards I use sunbrella with snaps. Keep my hatch boards stored about 90% of the time. It makes going and coming east keeps the sun & rain out. I agree its a safety issue offshore or during rough weather but we sail in the bay or protected waters most the time. I usually only use the hatch boards if going to shore for security .

My plexiglass boards where scratched with chipped corners and looked terrible.
Made 3 mahogany frames,2 with acrylic and one with vents,which can be closed on the inside,and a removable plywood box in the cockpit locker to store them.
