I have a new Hunter 36. I am told to get coverings for the hatch and companionway. (1) What do you recommend as material and design for hatch coverings and deck? (2) Is there a suitable covering that can be used without the need to drill into the deck for snaps? Thanks.

Why and when?

When will these covers be used? And why were they recommended? Where is the hatch that you want to cover? I thought there was more than one hatch on the H36. It seems like a dodger would suffice for the companionway. If the hatch cover is for privacy and/or shade then install one of those combination shade/screens on the inside. I have a sunbrella cover that I made for my H37C. It covers three of four hatches aft of the mast, the companionway and half of the cockpit including the instruments on the bulkhead and bridgedeck. It has short bungee cords every three feet, the kind with the plastic snap hooks. When I leave the boat I snap it to the toerails. The bimini and a helm cover complete the canvas protection.

Jason, I recently purchased a companionway cover from the canvas shop on this site for a 2004 / 306. The people were great, it arrived earlier than promised and fit like a glove. I also was reluctant to drill but it seemed like the best option to me. (Doesn't hurt as bad after the first hole or two) I not only use the cover to button up the boat when I'm away but have found it handy as a shade for the slider (just flip it back) and a canvas door to keep the AC in at the dock with the hatch boards stored (use it kinda like a tent door)Great dollar value for me. Good luck.

Hatch covers etc.

The covers will be used when the boat is not in use. The covers were recommended to protect the hatch itself and the fabric in the cabin from fading from the sun. One hatch is in front and the other behind the mast. Thanks.
