Has there ever been a Capri 22 Nationals?
The subject says it all. I ask because there is some debate on the Cat 25/250/Capri 25 association about not having a nationals for 2012/2013, and now possibly 2014 (believe it or not they've had nationals every year prior).

IF you could, would you attend one for the Capri 22? Would there be a huge draw of members?

The Capri 22 was made in larger numbers (is made) than the Capri 25, I suspect it'd have more people interested in racing on a national scale... The flip side the Cat25 association is the Catalina 25, which admittedly is not really a OD racer, but certainly there were plenty made (the association seems to think that the Cat 25 owners are the ones willing to travel to race their boats... I dunno if that is true or not)... My argument was that the Capri 25 are the racing types, and THEY are the ones who'd most likely trailer their boats to compete on a national scale.

So THAT's the question... If the Capri 22 had a nationals WOULD you trailer to it... keep in mind it might be ANYWHERE in the US.

I would love to get a few people in the great lakes together for a rendezvous. Sheboygan does have a US Sailing center and I could arrange use of the marks and committee boats.

There have been Capri22 Nationals as well as Regional regattas over the years. The issue is that this boat doesn't travel well nationally.

We tried to have a Capri22 Cup in Des Moines Ia for a couple of years as it was central to big fleets in Minnesota and Peoria. However we found that people really aren't willing to travel and race the Capri vs other more sporty boats. There is a big cost factor to get 3 or four people plus others to travel.

The IVY Club in Peoria, IL is having its annual PHRF regatta the first weekend in October. We mainly have Capri22's but there are a couple of S2's that race the same rating and one that is faster. Its usually the Capri's that win. We would be delighted if other boats were interested in attending from out of town. We have had some in the past from Wisconsin and Illinois.

If someone is willing to get a regatta together in Wisconsin, I can advertise it here in Peoria but our participation is dwindling as it is. There aren't many folks willing to travel right now.

Patrick I think you hit the nail on the head... cost of travel is just too prohibitive... I think that's what's killing it elsewhere as well.

I have traveled north three hours to Whiskeytown (north of Redding, CA) and south 12 hours to San Diego for participation in two of the past Capri 22 Nationals - in fact Patrick Gudat (pgudat - our moderator/host of this website) was pick-up crew for me in San Diego, many moons ago aboard Kudzu. I knew we didn't have much chance when one of the other racers - that happened to be an Ullman Sails sailmaker - pulled up to the parking lot and starting handing out bags of crisp, newly built sails to the local club members. My factory cloth didn't stand much chance...but I did learn a lot about currents (used to lake sailing) and seaweed (that's what was slowing us down!). I'd travel again IF not too far, making the idea of REGIONALs more enticing...
