Has there been a thread cursing spiders lately?

I have nothing against them as a creature in general.... but stop already with the landing on my boat like you little eight legged freaks are storming Normandy Beach!! I have done the drier sheets inside but dang, they just never stop with their assault on the outside of the boat. I have a beast on the top of the mast that has captured my wind vane and it takes a hurricane to break loose her webbing. I have yarn off my stays.... but dang it woman.... leave my wind vane alone already!!!

Have learned to ignore them

I have pretty much learned to just ignore the little beggars. Except for the ones that insist on making a web between the bimini frame and the boom end. Seems like every time I step on the boat, whap, right in the face.

I hate the little buggers, I have all kinds of streamers coming off of my shrouds. And I think they see me rowing out to my mooring and hide. Their not eating all the other bugs either, just making a mess with all their webs. I think I'm in an ongoing contest with one of them to see who can build the web or who can tear it down the fastest.

The spiders one my boat are a persistent problem. I typically spend 10 minutes evey time I sail nocking down webs and killing the unwanted stowaways, which adds up to a lot of time over the course of a season. Last week I started to spray all their typical hiding spaces with a spray made for spiders. I'll keep it up every week until they are gone or at least under control. I already had to make a trip up the mast to free my wind vane and windex. I know I will never get rid of them but I certainly won't give in to them either.

I climbed into my boat today (in my front yard) and there are enough spiders along the length of my mast, that if I can get them organized into a work party, I'll have a really strong main halyard soon. Dryer sheets are doing a good job inside the cabin. -Paul

Spiders...

come as standard equipment here on the northern Chesapeake Bay. Home Defense is the poison d'jur for combating their boardings. Have started trying Spider Away from WM too, with unconfirmable results.

If you haven't sailed in a while, putting up the mainsail results in what looks like Ranger training as the ones the size of your thumb come rappling down to the deck as the sail goes up!

After dark I go around the deck with a flashlight and a can of Raid and nail every one I can see and reach. The flashlight saves me from doing a face plant in one of the big bugger's webs! In the morning I hose off the resulting body count.

So far only the tinyest ones have dared enter the cabin, where they are hunted down relentlessly wherever a web is detected.

They have the run of my garden at home, which I think is only fair. :dance:

I use home defense and spray the cockpit and companionway weekly.
No problems little critters so far.
I learned about that stuff when the "mayflies" were invading the great lakes.

Spray with Ortho

I used to use Spider Kills from WM, but now they don't carry it. They have something called Spider Away which is supposed to shoo away spiders. Well what if my neighbor uses it, where do his spiders go??? I bought some Ortho Max Defender and it works almost as well as Spider Kills. I spray all the places spiders hide and hose down their dead bodies later. A couple of weekends of diligent application gets rid of the little monsters for quite some time.

My big somplaint is all the spots on the top side where they attach the silk. This stuff they shit is like epoxy!

My boat neighbor found "Totally Awsom" at Dollar General. $1.00 for a spray bottle and $3.00 for about a half gallon refill. Spray the stuff on the spider poop, wait about a minute and it just washes off with a hose! Best I have found.

Bounce dryer sheets runs them off to other areas of the boat, but I use the nightime Raid technique and it lasts a couple of weeks. Nothing else I have tried works any better.

I use "Awsome" too. The stuff is great for cleaning spider mess. Dollar Tree carries it also

Spider Away Test...

didn't go so well. Seemed to chase away the big guys, but there were a lot more of the little ones (offspring?) and more small webs. Haven't had much luck with dryer sheets under the mainsail cover either. Back to Home Defense.

"Awesom" is definately that! Only stuff I've found that readily removes the spider guano!
