I am thinking of upgrading my Hood 810 LD to the newer Hood Sea Furl 5. Has anyone done this? Are you happy? Anything I should be carefull of? Thanks Jim

915LD to 900SL

My C36 came with a 915LD (line drive, or continuous line) furler which I could not use for reefing (the line would just slip on the drum). I bought the upgrade kit from Hood (see link below) which replaced the drum only (900SL, or single line). Easy to change and cost a lot less than replacing the entire furler. It was very useful on my 9 week trip around Vancouver Island this past summer. Maybe not as slick as Harken or Schaefer but a much better value! Best of luck, Trevor

"Rivendel II" has the Hood Sea Furl 5

and she loves it! In 1998 we upgraded "Rivendel II", our Hunter Legend 43 (hull #1) from a Hood 900-something furler (which had lasted 8 years and 25,000 NM and was starting to bind up) to the new Hood SeaFurl 5 while in Hawaii and since then have sailed Tuvalu-Vanuatu-Australia-Vanuatu-Fiji-Vanuatu (10,000 NM) without any problems. The rigger who mounted the SeaFurl 5 in Hawaii was quite amazed how similar in construction it appeared to be to the Harken furlers he was more familiar with. Of course, the SeaFurl 5 sells for a fraction of the Harken price. perhaps the basic Harken patent expired and Hood saw their chance..... I think it is great value for the money and would buy it again. Flying Dutchman
