We have seen many posts from folks who have seen and ordered the new 33, but has anyone had the chance to sail it? The Owner reviews haven't posted any for the new 33 yet. Looking at the Hunter website, it looks as though the jib sheets have to go between the lower shrouds. Is this right? It would seem that there would be minimum jib adjustment possible with this arrangement, or a lot of rubbing of sheets on the wires, need experienced 33 sailors reviews. Thanks.

sailing the prototype

Ok guys/gals, first off, in the interests of complete disclosure, the reason I got a chance to sail the prototype is because I work for the Hunter dealership in Annapolis that rigged the boat for the fall Annapolis Boat Show. After the show, the boat stayed in Annapolis for a week so that Sail/Cruising World could do their evaluations and Hunter could get some good photos of the boat under sail. It was during this time that I got a chance to take the boat out. Good news, all of you that have a boat on order will probably be very happy. The boat in many ways sails much like the 356/36. Fast but also well balanced with a light helm. In the moderate breeze that I got to sail the boat in, with the sails properly trimmed, you could take your hand off the helm and the boat would track straight. More like a sport boat than a family cruiser (thank you Glen Henderson). For those that don't need the extra room of the 36 I would think the 33 should be almost as fast (waterline is about 1 foot shorter) and just as much fun.

New 33

I have been hanging on the edge of my seat all weekend. Thanks for the news. All we need now is for the weather to get better here in the North East.

Hi BOB

Hi Bob: I didn't know you lurked around HOW. How's everything going? How's Wind Racer? Mark Burrows

Hi Mark!

Mark, good hearing from you. All's well here except I'm ready for some warm weather. We're busy as heck getting new boats commissioned for spring. BTW, looks like Wind Racer has a new home. It's on its way to Canada next week.

Thanks all....

...for the responses and helping Bob to come clean on his response to all. Thanks Bob! It sounds like a nice Chesapeake Bay cruiser.

Your Welcome.

Your welcome Pat. I wasn't trying to be cagey with my first response. I enjoy getting on this site and seeing how my customers are using their boats, what if any problems they might be having, upgrades they're considering ect. This site is terrific place for owners to comunicate with each other, get ideas and ask questions. I do not feel however, that it is the proper place for a sales pitch and I was reluctant to post my impressions on the 33 for fear that they might be construed as such. Sailing is a wonderful activity and I truly enjoy using the products I sell as well as seeing my customer enjoying them. It is my hope that despite my obvious bias I can occasionally provide answers and opinions objectively as possible. (Hence my previous disclaimer)I certainly look forward to the oportunity to chime in on these forums from time to time but only if I think I can provide something valuable to the discussion. Many Thanks, Bob

Thanks Bob, comments are welcome...

...and do you (and anyone else) have any comments on the apparent problem with the jib sheets as I mentioned in my original post? Pat

Jib Sheets

Pat: I didn't chime in earlier because although my 33 has been built and delivered to my dealer, it is still being commissioned. We expect to be sailing by the end of April. But I think I can answer your concern about jib sheets. The standard 110% jib on the 33 doesn't come back far enough to touch the spreaders/shrouds. This is due to the B&R rig moving the shroud angles much farther back than a standard rig. HTH, Barry S/V Bear Necessity

Thanks Barry, but...

...it doesn't look like the jib is touching the shrouds, but if you look carefully at the Hunter photos of the 33 sailing, the jib sheets are routed between the lower shrouds. Is this only necessary to sail close hauled or is there another way to rig the jib sheets that will not rub on the shrouds at various jib positions? Does anyone see what I am concerned about from the photos? BTW, congrats on your new 33. I'll bet you are chomping at the boom. Pat

sheets

From what I remember from the fall, the jib lead wasn't a problem. The prototype however did have the aft mounted winch option and I believe I used the deck mounted jib tracks. Hunter does a pretty good job of testing out their new designs so I'd be real surprised if there was any significant issue with either set of tracks and the sheet angles.
