Has anyone replaced a spindle on a Hunter trailer?

I found out yesterday, when I went to repack the wheel bearings on my 95 Hunter 26 foot trailer that the last owner had frozen up a wheel bearing on the trailer. Sadly he/they used a welding torch and chizzel to cut the hub off. This was on the front axle that has the brake assembly mounted. The hub grease seal surface was totally ruined and both surfaces for the inner race were badly scarred and evidence of where they tried to "knurl" these areas is easily seen. The DUMB SOB actually knurled the seal surface. The axle is tubular with the spindle welded on the end. The spindle is I beam shaped with a rather severe drop(approx 3 1/2" drop). Does anyone know if the spindle can be pruchased and where? And what type if jig was used for alignment. Thank you much if you have any ideas. I would like very much to call you on the phone if you have any good ideas. Ray S/V "somewhat slowed down" Speedy

Trailer parts source

It might be easier and not much more expensive to replace the whole axle. You might try www.northerntool.com for the parts.

Maybe This Will Help

I removed the single axle from my 23.5 trailer and added two. It was easier for the place I got the axles from to build two than to match the one, this they discovered after they had quoted me a price so I got a real deal on the second one. So I have an extra axle sitting around if they are interchangeable get with me through the owners directory.

Check Hunter Marine

I believe your trailer was built in the Hunter Weld Shop. Check with Hunter to see if they can help you with the needed parts or direct you to the proper supplier. Good Luck Bob Gravenstine s/v Gravyboat

Local shop is best, but....

I agree with the other posters that a local shop, either welding on a new spindle or making a new axle would be best. If not, Champion Trailers http://www.championtrailers.com They have a great on-line catalog and info on nearly every part of a trailer. (The axle under my Laguna 18 failed on the way home several years ago-the square tube axle section had rusted through as a result of several years of salt-water immersions. The tube itself had a small drain hole that allowed salt water ingress and made it impossible to rinse out properly...) Good Luck!
