to a Hunter 28 or other similar sized boat? If so what was involved. I'm thinking of picking up a SIMRAD WP30 WheelPilot, any thoughts. Thanks

Autopilot Installation...

Yes. I just did it, Al, and although isn't a 28 and in my case was an AutoHelm 4000 from Raytheon, the job itself was a no brainer and the results are worth many times over the money and the time. The one you plan to use, is my understanding is no only cheaper, but also easier to install, since I think do not have the remote location for the compass. If you want details, including pics, let me know. Aldo S/V Isabel alozano@monmouth.com

Excellent choice.

If you search the "Forum Archives" you will see a lot of information regarding the WP30 and the A4000. See the LINK below for one of those items. If it will handle my H37C(18000#) in 20 knots true and six foot seas it should work for you.

WP300

Iinstalled a WP300 2 years ago and it is fine. It works well and is a snap to install. I use it with my GPS and love it. There are reasons to consider the Autohelm. You can install a rudder sensor on it so that the unit shuts off if it goes against the stop. I think it responds just a bit faster and keeps a slightly less wandering course than the WP300. Autohelm has a course display that WP300 doesn't. I like the WP300 but think I would have been happier with a 4000 with rudder sensor.

I installed a WP10 on my H31...

...and it is perfect. The WP30 has a NMEA interface which the WP10 does not have. This is a matter of your choice and your intended use. Installation took less than two hours by my wife and me, including mounting the unit to the pedestal, routing the wire and installing the circuit breaker. Best investment we have made. E-mail me for any further details. Good luck.

autopilot installation

If you are considering the WP30 make sure your wheel is big enough to stick out beyond the instrument panel on the autopilot. For a 22" wheel on a Hunter 27 there is not enough clearance between wheel and autopilot to grip and turn the wheel. I had one installed and then took it back because I could not steer by hand. I think you probably need at least a 26" wheel.
