A friend has asked me to help deliver an Island Packet 38 from Key West to New Orleans later this month. He's a very experienced blue water sailor, I've been offshore four times and am still a novice. Others will be along as well. Can anyone tell me what to expect in terms of winds, weather, number of days, and anything else I should consider? Thanks.

Gulf Hurricanes

Just let the storms blow you home. Actually, I wouldn't spend more than about two days away from a good forecast in the Gulf in July. Even if the boat has a weather fax, I still wouldn't wanna be more than a day from a safe harbour. In a nut shell, you should follow near the coast and maybe do it in several short hops.

expect hot hot hot and glassy conditions offshore or inshore. Oh yeah, hot, humid calm, lots of motoring...with occasional 160mph breezes!

I am in total agreement with the poor old sailor. If you make the trip, go around the coast. It may be farther, but at least there will be somewhere to hide. These storms come up fast. Not just a hurricane. I just got caught away from home when Cindy kicked up. There wasn't enough warning to try to get home. In between storms, look for lots of dead calms, mostly from dark to noon the following day winds will be vary light, or non existant. Of course if your adventurous, riding out a hurricane or tropical storm mid gulf would certainly be an adventure to tell the grandkids about.
