check with ameri trail in Kissimmee. they will custom build the trailer to fit your boat then weld everything in place. that's what I have for my hewes (you saw that trailer). I think mine was 2800 with the nice aluminum wheels, torsion axle, easy lube (or whatever they are called, sure lube maybe? spindles, led light package and all stainless hardware. keep in mind it was actually custom built to MY boat, as in they took my boat and built the trailer (including welding all the bunk brackets so they can never move). not sure if they do sailboat trailers but its worth a look

I used to advise of Ron Frisosky who was the rep for Sailors Trailers/Road King and gave out his cell phone number but for those who have his number, sadly he can no longer be reached as his new home is Heaven. If you knew him like I did, he was a fine sailor and gentleman who always helped and was one of the few honest salesmen I had known.

About two years ago, I shopped for a trailer for a Rhodes 22. Ball park you are looking at $1700.

What I ended up doing was buying a rotted out 19' fishing boat with a reusted mercrusier for $500... that was sitting on a very nice dual axle trailer. I stripped off the decent hardware, (cleats, anchor chocks, compass etc.) and sold the hull as a project for $100. If you count the hardware I also got... I think I got the trailer for free. It is much easier to find a nasty boat on a good trailer for little money, than it is to find a good trailer without a boat for little money. Look through Craigs List and set the max price at $500. Especially in the late Fall. People have old nasty boats that have sat unused for several years ... and they finally decide they just want them gone.

Having spent quite a few years in big-ticket retail, I know very well how rare that animal is. God rest him.

I will second what Crazy Dave said about Phil Herring. Hell, the whole group that support this site are great. This is one of the greatest boat knowledge bases out there.

Go with galvanized. Painted particularly in salt water is not good. If your boat is a Catalina 22 swing keel, suggest the Sport Catalina 22 trailer as it will fit nicely for a swing keel version of standard C 22. It sits low and easy to launch anywhere. The fellow who designed it was Ron Frisosky and he is in Heaven now. Hope to sail with him up there one day,.

I have a wing keel on my 2001 catalina22 and had some rust under the white paint on the steel trailer. I use it in salt water. I didn't like the idea of chipping and sanding as it would take forever. So I dropped it off and had a professional sand blast all the paint down to bare steel then he used 2 part epoxy 2 gallons mixed together to seal it up sprayed on. Cost $1,000. If it holds up, I'd say its worth the cost. Plus I over coated it with 20 cans of those car spray under coating from a auto parts store.

Would galvanizing have been better than painting for sea water use? I priced galvanizing cost for a 19' 3000# capacity trailer; $700+.

My current trailer is painted and I am debating between refurbishing or new.

Refurbishing: ~$1100 - galvanization and axles..
New galvanized: $3000

Possibly sell trailer if bought new: $800.

Dixie Dawg, if you want to talk with me about trailers, send me an email with phone and a good time to call. So much has been discussed and the fact I use to help and then design trailers, I will be glad to share what I know.

Thanks Dave, that's very kind of you! I don't think I'll have to bother you about it right away though; I'm going to make my current trailer last a while longer.

At this point, I've replaced the rims, tires (including spare), springs, bunks, bearings and brakes. The only "problem" it has now (that I know of) is that it's still painted, and moderately rusty. :)

Hey Dixi

I've used this stuff on several trailers called "Cold Galvanizing Compound" It is sold by Rustoleum and it come in a spray can. See link below.

It has an awful strong chemical smell when you apply it so wear a good respirator or use it on a windy day with the wind on your back.

You can get it at Lowes and/or Home Despot.

I can honestly say it seems to work fairly well. Knock the rust off with a wire wheel brush on a hand drill, some rust neutralizer in a spray can then spray this stuff.

The trailer in the pic was a pile of rust when I got it. And that picture was taken two years after I sprayed. It took several cans but still a lot cheaper than taking it to a place and doing a hot dip.
