This is a idea I had to get the best of both a inboard, and outboard. The boat has a 15 horse Evenrude outboard, with elect. start. I was just thinking about adding the gear/throttle contol to the cockpit. Has anyone done this, or do you have any comments.

Sure

Check with Evinrude. Often they'll have a conversion kit to allow for cockpit controls. I love mine! Like you said, the best of both worlds! LaDonna

Yeah-the best!!

I have a 2000 Johnson 15HP ES/LS/2 stroke. Previously had Evinrude 9.9 ES/LS/2stroke. Have a Morse MV-2 control in the cockpit, which controls throttle

Just bout the kit

Hello, God do I love this site. I have a 15 hp Johnson electric start tiler model. I just bought the hit that changes from tiller controls to the cable system. price 35.00. Looks fairly easy. One thing you will have no way to adjust the idle unless your kit comes with the gizzmo. mine didn't. But I guess I can always rev the throttle up. Also be aware that OMC is going out of business and has filed for chapter 11. They are liquidating all assets. If you have a brand new Johnson or Evinrude they will not cover warrantey work. However your marina or place you purchased the motor might out of good faith to the customer. Ladonna talked me into the whole outboard cockpit control set up.. Sorry to hear about your chain plates LaDonna. One more thing to add about switching from tiller to cables. I am going to try to leave the tiller arm in place because my Catalina 27 is a real slow turner and needs the ability to swing the outboard from left to right in an emergency or heavy weather condition. Let me know how you make out.

Carry extra cables!!

My last post indicated, in truncated format, that I was happy w/the OB remote controls. I truly think it gives you most of the advantages of the IB (except fuel economy, but there's another thread I started on that subject...), with all the advantages of an OB. Just make sure you carry an extra cable or two, and the connector fittings!! I've broken cables twice, connectors once. Once I was close to home, broke the shift cable, and got home reaching into the lazarette to shift. A pain, but no more so than an OB w/o remote. Next time it was the throttle, and 75 miles from home in very remote country (Pt. Reyes, CA). Luckily, one of the boats I was cruising with (Tayana 37) had a backup cable, and he lent it to me, which allowed me to get home after 45 minutes installation. Now I always carry spares under the V-berth!!

Controls are great!

I have a 2000 Honda 9.9 with cockpit controls. My controls include a switch which allows me to rev up the engine in neutral. I'm keeping my throttle on the OB. In heavy weather or a tight turn it could make the difference in success or failure.
