removehtml]Has anyone used the little sat. messenger that west marine is peddling for 150 bucks. Supposed to send a sat signal to up to l1 email addresses, at the touch of a button. Will send an all OK signal, or a 911 message. Gives your location with a built in GPS receiver. Cost is 100 bucks a year for unlimited use. Sounds interesting, if you venture offshore. Could easily let friends and family know your OK and where you are. Very interesting little gizmo. Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

Yes, It is Great

Several buddys are currently cruising the Carribean on a trawler I was on the first leg and may jump on for another. We got one and have been using it since before Thanksgiving. While underway we send a report at specified times and the people who get the email receive the lat and long within 10 minutes. You can send a couple of different reports OK, emergency or 911. http://www.nwfdailynews.com/article/9704/1

If you truly plan on crusing...

It does not have good coverage. There are too many holes in the network. Great for land use, but forget sailing with it. Look at the coverage map on their site. I think this was mainly for land use, not boating offshore. Its functionality is very limited. It is costly for what you don't get. However, if one feels it serves a need then I guess it is better than nothing.

Checked out

Checked out their web site, and the coverage looks pretty good to me. Any place I want to go, or may want to go seems covered. The Carribean is at the max of my cruising dreams, and it shows to have good coverage, as well as all coastal US for a hundred miles or more offshore. Also the optional 911 feature seems to be a bargain at 7.95 a year. Not convinced yet, but it seems like a pretty good deal, for the bucks.

I hope to see

someone come up with limited text messaging on this or a similar system sometime soon. That would be cool.
