harken furler modifying

I recently purchased a used mast that came with a harken furler system for a 41 ' Coronado. We stepped the mast with the furler attached. Turns out the furler system is a bit too long. Question is can I remove the drum and hardware from the bottom and cut it to length? Or does that have to be done from the top which is attached to the masthead. New to this stuff and could use experienced advice.

First, Welcome. Second, You will need to tell us the model number of your Harken furling system.

If it's a current version furling system, you can find manuals at http://www.harken.com/article.aspx?id=18799

If it's an out of production model, call Harken directly. (262) 691-3320 They are very helpful. It's better that your system is too long. I strongly suggest that you contact Harken if you have an old unit because parts may not be available if you make a mistake. In any event, you should cut the aluminum extrusion after the headstay is removed to avoid damaging it. Good luck with the project.

What model? I've seen one that the cut end is at the bottom. But I'm not sure what model. You can check the technical papers form there web site.
About cutting through your fore stay..... That's a bad idea.
Don't even mark any of the strands of the fore stay our you will need to replace it.
So be very careful if you decide to do it. If your not 100% comfortable using what ever tool your gong to use then hire a professional. Maybe get the place that sold you the furler to fix the length....
I'd call them first.

Better to have the cut/shorter extrusions at the top where there is less load on it.

You are putting a furling system from a 41' boat onto a 22 foot boat? Don't do it.

forget the furler for a 41fter, I think he said he used the mast also, he mentions stepping the mast with the furler attached. must be a print error...Red
