Hi, I just bought a Sandpiper 565 (18'6") and am trying to figure out how to rig the jib lanyard to the furler. Any help would be appreciated

Do you mean the furling line ?

You should mount a fairlead on the deck so that it enters the drum at a right angle. Then back to a cam cleat at the cockpit.

There is a fairlead amidships, leading to the furler. There is also a camcleat by the cockpit to furl the jib without leaving the tiller. I want to replace the halyard, but the furler is spring-loaded and I can't get it to release. Once I have installed the new halyard, I suppose the halyard also has to enter the furler for it to work, so how would I do this? Hope this post clarifies things a bit better. Thanks!

The Harken 00 has a Halyard swivel. The halyard simply attaches to the top shackle on that swivel. The jib head attaches to the bottom shackle off that swivel. The halyard does not enter the furler at all.

I am not sure what is spring loaded. When the sail is unfurled, can you release the halyard and lower the sail ?

Sorry, I'm talking about how I feed new furling line into the furler. A friend of mine said it is a two-person job, with one person pulling out all the old line and holding it while the other person cuts off the knot, feeds it through the hole at the top of the furler then feeds it into the fairlead. The furler itself is apparently spring-loaded so it will spin out all of the line unless you have it cleated off. I am thinking that there must be a tensioner on it somewhere, to wind a spring inside the drum. Are you familiar with this? I went to the Harken website, but they don't show you how to set it up.

I have never seen a furler that was spring loaded before. Tension on the jib makes them unwind and tension on the furling line winds then back up.

So I would pull all the line out (this will furl the jib), then tie the drum off to the bow pulpit or anchor roller with a piece of line and then tie the new line. Un furl the jib and the line should feed into the drum.

Are you trying to replace an existing furling line? If so, and if the jib is already furled, don't unfurl it. Take the old furling line off, put the new line on the drum, with a couple or few wraps, then pull out the jib. The new furling line will then wrap around the drum, voila!

The furler was attached to the headstay by mistake, which made the headstay too long. Now, we'll have to hoist the mast off and re-rig it properly. The joys of owning a new sailboat! Thanks for the suggestions, though. I went to the Harken website and downloaded the installation instructions, so there should be no problems now.
