I recently bought a a HJC 25 "76" with missing cabin steps. The vessel has an inboard Yanmar with a removable panel to get to the engine. I've already built the steps but I need hardware to attach the steps to the bulkhead/companionway. The hardware needs to allow me to readily remove the steps in order to access the diesel. Any ideas what hardware I should buy? Anyone have this boat same year with an inboard and intact original steps and hardware? Any help is appreciated. By the way, does anyone know of any Hunter Cherub. owner groups or racing events in my area? Plymouth/Cape Cod Bay area Massachusetts Thanks Biff

Biff, I have a 27' hunter 1978 in Yarmouth,MA

My steps actually slide over my Yanmar. I bet you even have the same yanmar sb8? I just had the entire top end of the engine rebuilt with new exhaust elbow and injector at Mack Boring. They are near you in Middleboro. They are also the local main distributor for Yanmar. They were very good , but not too cheap. Good luck with the boat. The Cherubini design is terrific.

Hardware for companionway

Biff I have a 1976 30" and there is no hardware to speak of for the companionway stairs. They slide in in front of the engine, and just rest against two teak rails that are mounted on either side of the bulkhead and gravity holds it in place.

Try McMaster

Bill, I built a generator enclosure last year. McMaster has a very wide variety of these types of cathes, latches and clamps and they have a pretty good selection in stainless steel. They will ship direct to you via a credit card purchase. They are a large supplier of parts for the company in which I work. Good luck, Mike DiMario

Do you need it?

Hardware I mean. I do not know the term that cabinetmakers use for hanging a cabinet. One is mounted on the wall and the other to the cabinet. They are each angled, top of wall mount and bottom of cabinet mount. The cabinet "hooks" onto the wall piece. Hunter uses the same trick on some engine/ladder boxes. This, of course, depends upon the design of your engine box.

Ed Schenk

Hi Ed, thanks for your response. I'm looking for something similar to the hardware used for a transom mounted rudder (gudgeons and pintles). I need to just drop the ladder into a piece of hardware mounted on the companionway.

Hardware Source

The best place I've found for specialty marine hardware is Jamestown Distributors in Rhode Island. They have a good website http://www.jamestowndistributors.com and very knowlegable sales people. They're worth a look Good luck.
