Our 84 H31 is hard to engage in foward, although reverse is fine. Should I start looking at the cable or the transmission? Thanks, Bob

Hello Bob: Prove trouble by removing cable at tranny and shifting manually. I always advocate DIY (yours may be a special case, routing, access, tools etc.) as you will learn your boat, which might come handy sometime. Case in point, just got back from a week at Charlotte. Not much wind, lots of motoring. Waterpump spun impeller. Pulled out of channel, anchored, changed impeller and back in business in 45 min. Think what the outcome would be if I couldn't DIY. Good luck red

Screwed Sheared off

While I was cruising this summer a problem developed with the transmission or shift lever or cable - it wouldn't shift into reverse. I examined everything and couldn't find the problem. Lubed the connections and continued. When going into a slip I went really slowly just incase the reverse wouldn't work again and it didn't - the lever broke! Actually, the screw that holds the lever sheared off! My boat is an '88 and it's always been a little hard to shift but I don't know if the pressure required was normal or not since I have nothing to compare it with. My suggestion would be if there is difficulty in shifting and the boat is over ten years old to buy new screws for any levers that are difficult to operate and replace the old ones, just as a precaution.
