Catalina 22 Henderson Bay, NY
I bought a used Cat 22 this fall and the bottom will need to be painted this spring before I put it in the water. It will be used in Lake Ontario. I have looked at the past posts about this but still do not seem to have a handle on the topic. Is there an advantage to using a hard paint vs the other type of bottom paints. It lookes to me as though there is a hard paint on the bottom now. I seem to be lost on this. There does not seem to be a great deal of paint on the bottom at this point, so I do not feel that I have to strip the old off. All help will be welcomed. Dale

Skip the hard paint

Unless you like the arduous task of sanding off old anti-fouling paint, I think you should avoid hard anti-fouling paints. They are good for vessels in tropical waters that may be hauled every other year or so. Since you will haul once a year, an ablative will be much more practical for you. I think for fresh water VC-17M is an excellent choice. However, you will probably have to sand off all the old anti-fouling paint before applying this. See the link.
