On this day in 1775 the Continental Congress created the Navy. Now 245 years old!

"A good Navy is not a provocation to war. It is the surest guaranty of peace." - Theodore Roosevelt

"I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.'" - John F. Kennedy

" I have not yet begun to fight!" - John Paul Jones

Go Navy!!!!
Jim....

PS: Yes we created the Marines later, November 10, 1775;)

John Paul Jones ordered his Marines to fire on the decks of the HMS Serapis, with withering fire from His ship's riggings.

One Marine tossed a grenade in the British Ship's powder magazine. This marked the beginning of the surrender of the Serapis.

Go Marines...
Jim...

PS: Imagine how the Marines, locked their feet, fired and reloaded in those riggings.:yikes:
PSS: Of course the Navy was in hand to hand combat on the Decks.

Ditto on Happy Birthday USN. Go Navy!
For anyone who hasn't read Six Frigates by Ian Toll, I highly recommend it. It's the early history of the Navy and I summarize it as "1776 - the Sequel."
