October in July!
What a nice day! But it sure didn't seem like a holiday. Thursday evening brought us violent storms and hail from a cold front, leaving an absolute mess in everyone's yard and cancelling fireworks on the lake. Friday morning brought us gloomy, cold wind from the front that is chasing Arthur's tail. Enthusiasm for the 4th waned around here. But by the afternoon, the clouds where chased away by a 20 knot breeze from the northwest!
I sailed for about 4 hours on the lake almost completely alone. There were only a handful of power boats (mostly pontoon boats) and a windsurfer made an appearance. (I felt just a tinge of wishful thinking for my short board and small sail). One other sailboat made an appearance just as I was heading in at about 7. With a 100 jib and reefed main, I was breaking 7 knots on the downwind runs. I was even wearing a light sweatshirt in the sub-70 temperature. It was one of those perfect October days that I often long for in the middle of summer!
We have a bbq with family this afternoon and fireworks on the lake are now scheduled for Sunday night. Now that we're sufficiently dried out and cleaned-up, the yard is back to normal as well. The hail left an inch of ice on the deck Thursday evening and the yard was littered with small branches and leaves as if we had a surprise October snow storm!
