Hank Jib transformation

High,

My rolling furler jib got destroyed during IKE.
I have and old hank jib. I asked to the sailmaker to transform it and they are asking $300. Beside taking the hanks out, and UV protection what else they have to do?. The luff tape looks similar in both sails.
Any suggestions?

Are you sure that the luff will work by simply removing the hanks? What about the size and strength of the cord? And are there not grommets to be removed(leaving holes) where the hanks were attached? The estimate does not sound unreasonable to me.

Why don't you ask your sailmaker for the breakdown?

That's a fair price he has given you. There's a hell of a lot more involved than what you just rhymed off to convert a hanked on jib over to luff tape.

Luff tape

As jimq implies, the sailmaker is doing more than just removing the hanks - he is also sewing luff tape so the sail will fit into the furler's foil. You don't say how big your boat is, but it is not a cheap job.

I concur, dependant on the size of your boat.
I've converted a hank-on to furling jib for my O'Day 27 but the cost of materials alone was close to $200. Then I found an adapter to allow the hanks to slide up the foil. I use this for my other jib sails. They don't have the Sunbrella sacrificial cover but I don't leave them on the foil. Now the spare jibs are primarily used for a "tradewinds rig" (two jibs sailing downwind) because I don't have a spinnaker.

Note: From Practical Sailor "If you are converting from hank-on sails to a luff tape for a grooved device, most sailmakers will charge about $2.50 per foot of luff length to make the alteration, or about $110 per sail for a masthead 34-footer."

Sail Conversion

I paid $150.00 for my 25' luff sail which worked out to $6.00/ft to go from hank-on to #6 luff. (NorthSails) I did not get the UV strip as it would have made it cost prohibitive. Only $300.00 for a brand new replacement jib with #6 Luff from Kelly-Hanson. You may want to price a replacement sail.

I did it dirt cheap myself on my old Cal 27-T/2 using Kiwi slides obtained from Brian Cleverly at www.anzam.com

Take off the hanks and sew on the slides in the gromet holes. I didn't add a sunscreen, but you can get that in stick on cloth too.

ask the sailmaker to break it down. Or why don't you show the Practical Sailor article to the sailmaker to get his reaction. The cost of sewing on sacrificial UV protection strip is normally about 4-6 bucks a foot. Much more than the luff tape conversion. Also.... some sailmakers might offer to install a luff pad to improve sail trim when it is reefed on the roller furler.

Luff tape

I changed 3 sails from hank on to #6 luff tape when I got roller furling last season on my Pearson 26W cost me $600 at doyle in Salem MA for the 3 sails A genoa, working jib,and storm JIb. That was without sun shade. All 3 sails were fairly new. There is a outfit in FL called National sail supply He`s an agent for a sailmaker in the Orient. I bought a new main fron him 3 years
ago. It was $500 plus $25 shipping. He made me a new sail cover in his
loft out of sunbrella. It was top qualitY at a reasonable price. Check it out.
