I ran down to Portsmouth on Friday and discovered a great town where I had a nice dinner before heading back out to anchor at Mile Zero off Hospital Point. It was a nice afternoon and evening to be at anchor to sit in the cockpit, watch the river traffic and the lights of Norfolk come on. I could just see the pilothouse of one of my research vessels at the NOAA dock across the river.

I visited the very friendly Mile Zero Marine Supply which has recently moved a few blocks up High Street to number 609, still an easy walk. They are planning on putting in an outdoor patio where visiting cruisers can get together and socialize after business hours. If you can’t find what you need there or in town, they will also drive you just about anywhere within reason to get it. Great folks.

They confirmed what has been widely reported on Internet cruising sites, the no overnight docking signs at the two mooring basins are not being enforced and cruisers are welcome to stay for reasonable periods. There are a lot of empty storefronts and the town needs the business. The signs are evidently required by state law due to lack of electrical power and water but the local police do not consider it their business.

This is the residence of my nearest neighbor:

The police cars leaving the station drive right by the dock and this low income housing project so the tolerance level is evidently pretty high.

Despite the above, this is a reasonably upscale place. There are frequent ferries across the river from Norfolk and this is evidently the place to come to eat and drink. There are a lot of restaurants so competition keeps the quality up. I haven’t found a bad one yet and, believe me, I am looking. I’m probably going to spend as much here as if I stayed in a marina but I’m getting a lot more for the money.

I came back into the High Street Basin yesterday and spent the night because of forecast thunderstorms. Nothing like being tucked in between high buildings when lightning threatens. The storms turned out to be just rain but it was a pleasant night, no commotion on shore even on a Saturday night. It was nice to be able to walk up for a nice brunch this morning.

The weather turned raw and damp with a northeast wind so I've decided to just stay put until it clears.

The Pride of Baltimore II is up on the hard in the shipyard within easy walk so I hope to catch up with Captain Jan Miles while I’m here.

Your stay in Porthsmouth
Hi Roger:
We never met, I disappointed to say I occasionally follow your blog, however enjoy all ouf "your findings." That new neighbor photo-only in the USA. While it is a sad site to see, your sense of humor is more than OK.
I say one thing, that is quite a parking place you got there! My guess, the same space in the Boston Harbor, would be quite a bit more expensive. No worry though, I understand you very far away from that destination at thi s moment.

When and if you come back to the NJ shore area, I would be very interested to understand what you think about the area and the condition that Sandy left things?
Best Regards

Rodger,

Strider looks good, and seems right at home over there in Portsmouth :)

If you walk down to Ocean Marine to see Capt Miles and The Pride of Baltimore, and happen to see the service manager, his name is Scott Hawkins. Say hi, he's another mutual "tooth friend".

Portsmouth was one of our favorites, go to;

"The Beir Garden", a German restaurant with over 250 beers on the beer list, from all over the world.

Skipjack Nautical Wares, where the proprietor gave us the unofficial Boaters Guide to Olde Towne Portsmouth, Va. and was a good source of local information.

There is a small ferry that runs between Portsmouth and Norfolk which is just across the river.

We couldn't pass it up for $.75. Incidentally the first ferry service in America was established in 1636 between Portsmouth and Norfolk.

Been there twice. I'm wondering if, since this is the off season and no one else seems interested in the docks, I could work my way through all 250 beers.

If anyone in the area would like to give me some help, let me know:)

Ferry is now $1.50, still a bargain. I'm going to go over and see Norfolk if it ever stops raining.

Good Morning Roger,
As always I enjoy the posts, photos and narritives, you make our decision to cruise when my wife retires a much easier one to make. Portsmouth even at this time of year and the weather you describe is still far and away preferable to the minus temps and snowcover in Eastport, Maine. I hope to have the cover off by the end of the 1st week in April. Fairs winds and enjoy a beer from the 250 for me.

Duh! there I was in another thread recommending just that. I should have read all the threads first.

BTW the last time I was in Portsmouth I was had a schooner docked on the outside wall of the basin where you are docked.

Seniors are still $0.75, according to their website.

Boy, that boat basin looks familiar. We stayed in one of them on our last trip up the coast from Florida. Just like you, we saw the signs that said "No docking overnight", but the guide book said that no one would bother us, just don't leave the boat unattended overnight. Good advice in any urban setting. We had a nice stay, walked around the area, found stores and restaurants. I think we are starting to see a good attitude about getting boaters to stay in an area, at least in some towns.

Skipjack Nautical is outstanding.

We got a fantastic deal on some used 3/4" double braid dock lines just before Sandy at Mile Zero.

Speaking of Sandy, friends stayed there during the 'cane; surge was 4' over the pilings. Could not get off the boat.

Nice stop
