Hanging Locker Conversion

Is it just me or do others regard their hanging locker as wasted space? Anybody ever seen (or considered) one converted to maybe a drawer bank or something?

Converted to shelves

I went to Menards and purchased some white wire shelving and installed 4 shelves in the hanging locker area. The wire type shelf give good ventalation to the locker area. I also installed them upside down so the front lip was up which helped to kept the items from falling out.I agree with you that they are waste of space.

I converted my hanging locker to shelves. The door is louvered for ventilation, so I used mahogany. Definitely a better use of space!Best,Trevor

Hanging Locker Mods

I put shelves in my locker, too. I'm sorry I didn't think of those wire shelves - what a great idea! I also moved that vertical panel (that makes the front of the locker) back a couple inches so there's a bit more room for the head.

Doug, how did you mount the wire shelves?

How did you mount them in the cutout? Is it individual shelves, or a one piece unit that just happened to fit the opening? Are they secured to the plywood or the hull? Thanks...Gary

teak shelves

Gary,I have a 1983 O'day 23 I keep just up the canal from Orange Beach Marina.I have to assume that the 25 is similar to the 23. I had to replace my port bulkhead due to rot, and I had some teak veneered plywood left over. I cut a shelf for the lower part of the hanging locker with a fiddle on the front. I left the clothes rod in place and use it to keep a roll of paper towels handy. Look for me on the water: "La Carovita"Terry

for the suggestion. Haven't decided just how I'm gonna arrange/build the shelves, but whatever I do it will be a more practical use of space. The paper towel idea is a good one too. I don't get over around Terry Cove / Perdido Pass area due to my deep draft 25, but perhaps I'll bump into you sometimes in the ICW. Haven't gotten around to naming mine yet. Just "Pirates Cove" on the stern.....Gary

Canvas

On my 322 I converted the back locker to storage with a hanging canvas shoe organizer from Lowes.Just hang from the existing pole and the compartments are great for food or whatever.Easy to remove if you ever need the locker.Jeff
