Next move? Current turns East at 8:48am. We could use provisions. Without a car, this area of Ma. is a food dessert. Onset had a limited grocery (limited fresh food), but Dave Evans reports it is closed for repairs. Sandwich marina may be best option: waiting for online confirmation. Looking to scituate as a next stop with full provisions. Any advice?

Spell check or wet thumbs on phone, but I’ll take the pun. We had a very good Portuguese breakfast in onset coming down. It’s on upswing but fresh food, our Achilles heel while sailing, is scarce.

Newport to the west or Vineyard Haven to the east have easy access to groceries, etc.

Using an Uber in sandwich. One of 4 sailboats in acres of Mobo’s. Would roast without an awning overhead

Too late but Red Brook Harbor (Kingman Marine or anchor) has easy access to anything you need. Either dinghy or cab.

That’s changed then. Last time we had to charter a woman and car that drove us to 3 stops. Took a couple hours.

Yeah, maybe so. We go to Red Brook every season and Kingman has really elevated their game. A short dinghy ride to the North leads to a town dock. Groceries 1/3 mi walk. Or, they deliver. "Charter a woman". Hmmm. Interesting concept. Never needed to myself. :)

Uber to the rescue! Hotter than blazes in sandwich. I like the heat but this 15 to 20 scirocco is a force. Fully provisioned and iced down, enjoying the local ‘culcha’

Leaving Sandwich, we had the most bizarre and potentially dangerous experience. Motoring out into the Cape Cod Canal, into channel, there was a stiff breeze coming from Sandwich.

We felt and heard a substantial object hit, high, in the mizzen rigging. Bird?

Out of the corner of my eye I saw a large Stripped Bass lure dancing in the life lines, just a foot or so downwind of me at the helm. It had 3 gleaming treble hooks; 9 - large, surgically sharp meat hooks in all. I could see the monofilament line hanging from above the life lines.

About then, the Wanker on the other end (on the Sandwich bulkhead!), realized he'd hooked a sailboat, and he puts his entire weight into his 10' meat stick (surf rod). Then I could see the mizzen rigging bending toward Sandwich, and toward me,... at the helm!

Then like somebody shook a handful of $20 dollar bills at a pole dancer, that Bass lure began to spin around the mizzen shroud! It made a loud WHIRRR sound! I hit the deck to stay below it.

It spun several times then it leaped to the mains backstay, just over my head! There, it did the same high speed pole dance above, "WHIRRR", and miraculously, it flew off the back stay!

It snapped away - line intact - like it was launched from a cross bow!

I shudder to think if that mass of barbed hooks had come in contact with one of us. We were lucky.

How dare you let all that rigging get in the way of a bass plug! Those treble hooks are nasty. I took most of them off my lures. They hooked my fingers way more than any fish.

How did it not tangle in any of the rigging is a real surprise, glad you made it through the canal. [The only pole dancing I've experienced is sliding one to a truck.]

Love the word “wanker”, and your usage of it. Well-written post Tom. Glad nobody was hurt.
