Why not have Both!

Steve,Almost any handheld will provide basic data such SOG, etc. Get a cheap one and use it as a backup or remote. For position info, turn it off and get out your paper charts. If you want accurate intuitive position reference, and usable graphic waypoint system, consider a fixed mount system with a graphic display. Does not need to be the latest technology. We have a RM RL70C monochrome system (purchased used on Ebay with antenna, then added C-map chart for most of the Gulf). Total cost was less than $600.00. Lot of bargains out there if you shop.Jon

I have a Magellan Marine Meridian

I really use it-even on a 22,000 acre lake (Lake Ray Hubbard-Dallas TX) has many nav points from all over already built in and I bought it as a kit from WEst Marine with Blue Nav software. I can use it in the car too! Best of both worlds.

Do they work down below?

I am agonizing over the choice of a GPS...Can anyone tell me if a good quality unit with an internal antenea will work down below on a fiberglass boat?

I use the Garmin 76SMap and consider it almost as important as my PFD. Won't work inside your boat but you can get an external antenna.Check out the Practical Sailor review on handheld GPS units.

My old Garmin works fine sitting on the Nav.

table, I have had internal ant. on laptops that would operate on seat in a car with lots of slanting windshield but not a truck trying to shoot thru metal roof. In a land vehicle they seem to be getting signal thru glass & openings. On my boat seems to get just as strong & same satellites from cabin as cockpit, boat is C270 with lots of lights but it seems to get signal thru fiberglass.
