Why not have Both!
Steve,Almost any handheld will provide basic data such SOG, etc. Get a cheap one and use it as a backup or remote. For position info, turn it off and get out your paper charts. If you want accurate intuitive position reference, and usable graphic waypoint system, consider a fixed mount system with a graphic display. Does not need to be the latest technology. We have a RM RL70C monochrome system (purchased used on Ebay with antenna, then added C-map chart for most of the Gulf). Total cost was less than $600.00. Lot of bargains out there if you shop.Jon
