I'm looking to buy a handheld GPS receiver. Anyone have recommendations!

Garmin 48

You can't beat the Garmin 48 for boating purposes. I think Garmin is coming out with a newer model if you want to wait, otherwise you can pick up the 48 for about $180. Happy plotting, Ike

Garmin...

..if looking for modestly priced proven one, have the Garmin 12 , or one of it's variations. maqke sure you get the mounting bracket and the 12V power cord.

Garmin 48

Practical Sailor rated the Garmin 48 its top choice/best deal the last time they did a handheld comparison. I have a few friends who have them and love them. I would agree with the 12V cable and mounting bracket as worthwhile options.

Garmin 12XL

I'm happy with the 12XL. (But secretly envious of the 48 owners. The newer models have built-in marine database)

Depends on what you need...

My Garmin GPS12 works just fine for me and is all I need. My sailing area is from Greenwich Bay, RI to Kennebunkport, ME and this does everything I need it to do. As the old engineer's saying goes, "If it ain't broke then it doesn't have enough features on it". Good luck. Cheers, Bob Launch now pushed back 2 weeks... (All this #$%@* snow is really beginning to piss me off)

I like that saying, Bob. My recommendation is...

Garmin 48. Garmin also has a great video on how to use it. It's $19.99 at West Marine. The text manual I found difficult to follow at times. Practical Sailor rated the 48 as tops in the non chartplotter handheld category.

Hold Off until April

The game has just changed with regard to GPS recievers. I would hold off for a couple of months until the WAAS units are available. Then I would look at the features you need and get the unit that makes sense. My preference is for Garmin. I have a 12XL and I find it and the others in the line to be the most user-friendly. The new units will continue that user friendlyness with the addition of increased accuracy. The new line of Garmin handhelds will be based on the case that the E-trex comes in, but they will have more featured than the E-trex and come in a bunch of colors. Justin - O'day Onwers' Web

Documentation for Garmin Products...

I had a difficult time following the book as well. I went to the Garmin website and downloaded the user's manual in a .pdf file. When I printed it full size, believe it or not, it was much easier to follow...for what that's worth. Cheers, Bob

Garmin 175

I have a Garmin 175 and it has worked very well for 2 seasons of sailing in the Chesapeake Bay. It does go through batteries quite fast, however my dealer installed a bracket with hot wire into my boats electrical system, which has worked flawlessly.
