Has anyone ever rigged a hammock to the deck of your boat. We received one as a gift and I was wondering if we could use it on the deck of our 35 Legend.

HANG IT UP!

Hang it between your forestay and mast. We just tie ours at each end. Great spot for a nap!

Use one all the time

Attach one end to the front of the mast on the spinnaker eyelet or around the mast and the other end with a rope that goes around the forestay. Its really great when you are crusing without the foresail up.

Nervous husband

We have only been sailing 3 years and don't know the full capability of the boat & it's rigging. My husband wieghs about 190. That's not too much of a strain on the forestay?

1000's of pounds when sailing.

Margaret: There are thousands of pounds of load on the forestay when you are sailing. Have your husband (you can do it too) check the load strength of the wire on your forestay. You may be surprised. (7/32" is over 5000# + breaking strength).

What about sail chafe

I agree the stay should handle the load, but tying one end of a hammock around a roller furled jib could put a lot of stress on the sail cloth. I like the idea of the hammock but am not too sure of the chafe I would be placing on the sail. How about putting it between the davits? A cold beer, a cool breeze, a safety harness and don't roll out on the wrong side. Or put it under the boom, you get a different view with each tack or gybe.

Yes

I rig my hammock to the end of my spinnaker pole and the other end to the mast car. the pole topping lift keeps the pole in place. I run a line from the outboard pole end to the headstay and back to the hammock to keep from hitting the shrouds. when you need to exit the hammock simply pull the control line lead around the headstay so that the hammock comes back over the foredeck and voila!

Can a 225lb fish flop in a hammock on a smaller boat? Love to try it but love my boat too. Any advice? Glenn, WindWisp

Thanks

Thanks everyone. Your responses have been very helpful!

Mr Fish

Your spin pole can more than handel the load. A spinnaker can produce a hellava load so you can be sure your 225#'s is no real test besides the topping lift is carrying the greatest load.
