I just purchased a 1983 Catalina 30 and would enjoy setting up an HF Ham station. Does anyone have ideas for antenna? What kind of electrical requirements will I need? Right now, I only have 2 12 volt batteries. Any ideas on mounting the rig at the nav station? Your input would be greatly appreciated. 73, Eric, N2EL

Ham Radio

I have a Catalina 320 and use a ham stick on the stern rail with a quick disconnect. Antennas for 75,40,20 and 17. Rig is Kenwood 570 mounted on the Nav. Table. I had the same rig on my Catalina 27 before buying the new boat with the same setup. You will need a tuner, either auto or mfj makes a small mobile tuner that also works well. Works great..W4DAG

Backpacker

I've had pretty decent luck with an alligator clip on the back stay and an MFJ Random Wire tuner at low power. I know some folks that have had pretty good luck with the outbacker antenna clamped to the rail. Dave WA1RC

Grounding ham gear

Thanks for the suggestions for antenna for a ham rig on the catalina 30. If I use the back stay, is it adequately insulated? What do people use as a ground? Do the keel bolts work? Any other ideas?
