This is a super-cool idea, and if I can help too, please let me know;
I do have some 'hobbyish' web (PHP) and DB experience from long long ago.

If this were done right the first time (and by right I mean using a
relational system, totally concise, adaptable, and incluing the
vessel's history [ie, new owner does not cause loss of old owner
data]), it would be an AMAZING and INVALUABLE set of data. It seems
to me most people who think of a 'database' usually just mean a flat
file (that you could make in Excel) with the particulars; if that's
what you're doing, do it in Excel - it'll save you time.

If you are thinking of making use of the advantages of a true
relational database, I would LOVE to help design & build it.

I'd think it would be good to have a web-based database where Vega owners can enter and update their own info, rather than one person having to maintain it?

Hi All

I reckon we need a relational Database. First we need to decide what fields etc are needed. Also need someone who is capable to write such things.. Perhaps Jonathan Lomas? All comers welcome, all ideas welcome. We have somewhere to store it (www.albinvega.com).

Hi all,
why dont we do it with filemaker pro.
I can dispose of the base, it is quite easy to set up, one can do
relational database, it web capable, windows and mac compatible. I
could let you have the mac base if you let me know where to send it to.

Please feel free to give it a go. We need to agree what fields etc to be used. I have the UK Database on MS Access.

Only nominated people will be able to amend data.

I would agree that it be wholly web-based, so built using something
like PHP and MySQL.

However, having said that, how it's BUILT is largely irrelevant, when
compared to how it's DESIGNED.

It really needs to be thought through thoroughly (type that ten times
fast :p); it's cool to have the database, but it's important to
understand what we want to use the data for, or we'll end up with
something that just doesn't get used.

I would also suggest that anyone be allowed to create a record (with
some access control built into that statement), because if 'authorized
personnel' are the only ones that can add to/adjust/delete, then I
suspect it won't remain very up-to-date; might as well distribute the
workload as much as possible. And of course, no one knows their own
boat like the owner.

Just some more thoughts.
